Watermelons are fruits that appear in several games of the Mario franchise and differ from game to game. They are based on the real-life fruits and strongly vary in size. Watermelons appear mainly in the Yoshi franchise, along with many other kinds of fruit.
History
Yoshi franchise
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its reissue, there are three different types of watermelon (parsed as Water Melon in one preview)[1] that offer special attacks. Green watermelons allow a Yoshi to spit out the seeds as projectiles; if a green watermelon already has a bite mark in it, there will be only a third as many seeds. Ukikis have many watermelons, some half-eaten by them, which they use to spit seeds at a Yoshi. Red watermelons allow three shots of fire breath that burn enemies and melt Ice Blocks. Blue watermelons allow three shots of ice breath that freeze enemies, making them harmless and immobile and causing them to break apart when a Yoshi touches them. Super Green Watermelons, Super Red Watermelons, and Super Blue Watermelons are also available as Special Items, which automatically give a Yoshi the ability of the watermelon as if he had gulped it. Watermelons are featured prominently in the Mini Battle called Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest.
The Super Green Watermelon[2] Special Item is available in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, and it gives a Yoshi as many as 60 seeds.
Yoshi's Story
In Yoshi's Story, watermelons appear as the favorite fruit of Green Yoshis, along with melons.
Yoshi's New Island
Watermelons in Yoshi's New Island are functionally the same as in the original. Watermelons with bite marks are first encountered in Ukiki Jammin', first held by an Ukiki and having seeds that are spat out by them. A full variant of the watermelon is found in Ride the Blarggwich. Red and blue watermelons can also be found in later levels of the game, with red watermelons first debuting in Harry Hedgehog's Labyrinth and blue watermelons in Brave the Bumpty Blizzard.
Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World
In Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, Yoshi uses the green watermelons to spit out seeds that can hit enemies, break sponge obstacles, and reach collectible items. When there is a bite on a watermelon, there will be third as many seeds in it. Fire and ice watermelons also make a return. A fire watermelon allows Yoshi to breathe out three streams of fire. Fire melts ice blocks as well as defeating enemies. In this game, an ice watermelon allows Yoshi to breathe out five streams of ice which can freeze enemies upon contact. Yoshi can kick the enemy and it will slide in the direction of the kick, eventually breaking apart. Some of the watermelons are required for 100% completion of the game. They are also available as Power Badges.
The All-you-can-eat watermelon! Power Badge in Yoshi's Woolly World automatically places a watermelon in a Yoshi's mouth, allowing him to have its ability at nearly any point.
Super Mario-kun
Watermelons appear in volume 14 of Super Mario-kun, which is the adaption of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Here, as in the game, they give characters who eat them respective abilities. The first time they appear, Mario and Luigi stuff a Super Red Watermelon inside a crying Baby Mario to quiet him. He then breathes fire at Toadies who first attempted to attack. The next time they appear, Helicopter Yoshi eats a Super Green Watermelon and spits seeds at Kamek, Toadies, and Baby Mario they are carrying. During their battle against a Lunge Fish, Mario stuffs a Super Blue Watermelon inside Yoshi to make Yoshi freeze the Lunge Fish.
Mario Party series
Mario Party
In Mario Party, the board Yoshi's Tropical Island contains Watermelon Island, an island with several giant watermelons.
Mario Party 5
In Mario Party 5, Super Duel Mode contains a weapon for machines called the Seed Machine Gun, which is modeled after the watermelons from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. It fires seeds at a rapid rate and is worth five Battle Game Points.
Mario Party 10
In Mario Party 10, watermelons appear in the minigame Watermelon Whalin', where they are carried by the rival players. The solo player's objective is to break them.
Donkey Kong 64

In Donkey Kong 64, watermelons, referred to as melons in this game, are used as the Kongs' life meter. Each melon is made up of four slices. If a Kong gets hit by an enemy or gets in contact with a stage hazard, such as lava or quicksand, they lose a melon slice of their health, sometimes even half a melon (the equivalent of two slices). The Kongs can refill their health with the melon slices that they find, either by breaking open a Melon Crate or by defeating enemies such as Kritters or Gnawties. If the Kongs lose all their health, they are sent back to the starting point of the area. At first, the Kongs start out only having one melon in their health meter, but they can have up to three by obtaining a melon upgrade from Candy Kong in Angry Aztec and Crystal Caves each. Melons are also used as ammo in some bonus stages such as Teetering Turtle Trouble.
Super Mario series
Super Mario Sunshine
In Super Mario Sunshine, massive watermelons appear. In Gelato Beach, the Surf Cabana makes juice smoothies out of watermelons, and there is a Watermelon Festival to show off the person with the largest watermelon. The watermelons there are quite sensitive to pressure, and act and look more like water balloons. In the secret levels and Pianta Village, watermelon blocks can be found, which act as breakable blocks.
Super Mario Galaxy
In Super Mario Galaxy, when 9999 Star Bits are collected, all the green coconuts in the game turn into watermelons. A watermelon is also featured in the Bubble Blastoff mission in the Deep Dark Galaxy. Mario lands on a glass planet where he must Ground Pound the three encircling tennis balls within the planet which will hit the watermelon in the center and cause it to grow visibly larger until it shatters the glass planet and becomes the new planet.
Super Mario Galaxy 2
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, all green coconuts turn into watermelons when 9999 Star Bits are collected, like in the previous game.
Nintendo Puzzle Collection
In Nintendo Puzzle Collection, green, red, and blue Watermelons cascade down the screen when a stage of Round 9 is cleared in the Action Mode of Yoshi no Cookie.
WarioWare series
Watermelons make a few appearances in the microgames of the WarioWare series. In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Body Block involves people keeping a watermelon bouncing around. In WarioWare: Touched!, these fruit appear in Steel Chef, It Slices, It Dices, and Global Warning. The microgame Universal Marionette from WarioWare: Smooth Moves features watermelons as well.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
In Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, there is a kingdom called the Watermelon Kingdom. The goal for each level from this kingdom is a giant watermelon.
Yoshi Touch & Go
In Yoshi Touch & Go, watermelons, when eaten, give Yoshi five eggs.
Mario Kart Arcade GP
In Mario Kart Arcade GP, the goal of the bonus stage of the Mario Cup is to push a watermelon to the goal.
Mario Hoops 3-on-3
In Mario Hoops 3-on-3, the Watermelon is one of the unlockable basketballs.
DK: Jungle Climber
In DK: Jungle Climber a giant watermelon is found in Veggie Patch. After being destroyed, its seeds are used as pegs.
Mario Sports Mix
Watermelons also make an appearance in Mario Sports Mix. In this game, they are objects that appear in the minigame, Feed Petey. If the player shoots one watermelon into Petey Piranha's mouth, they are awarded fifty points. To obtain the watermelon, the player must jump up under the watermelon. The watermelon is suspended in midair on a rope.
Luigi's Mansion series
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon
In Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Watermelons appear in the room floors of ScareScraper. When a player breaks one, it will release several hearts for players to recover their HP.
Luigi's Mansion 3
In Luigi's Mansion 3, Watermelons are found in the Kitchen alongside pumpkins. They don't drop hearts when destroyed, but they can be flung at Chef Soulfflé to disarm him of his frying pan.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
In Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, explosive watermelons known as Watermelon Fuse Bombs appear. They can be picked up and thrown at enemies to defeat them, or at certain obstacles to destroy them, usually to reveal a secret. Large rectangular watermelons also make an appearance as platforms in the level Fruity Factory, a reference to real-life square watermelons grown in Japan.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
This section is referring to a subject in an upcoming or recently released film. When the film is released, or more information about this subject is found, this section may need major rewriting. This notice should be removed after a month has passed since the film was first released.
In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, watermelons can be seen in a fruit cart along with Pineapples and Bananas while Toad is escorting Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom.
Other appearances
In the Super Mario Mash-up for Minecraft, Melons are replaced by Watermelons.
