Yoshis sure are persistent. I assumed you'd have all run home by now! Fine! Burt, hitch up your pants and GO BUST UP THAT YOSHI!”
Kamek, Yoshi's Woolly World

Burt the Bashful, also spelled Bert the Bashful,[1] is a recurring boss in the Yoshi franchise. He started out as a normal Burt, which Kamek grows to a massive size in the events of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

History[edit]

Yoshi series[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

“So, you're still on the baby's side, Yoshi-baby? Then get a load of THIS!”
Kamek, Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Burt the Bashful is the first mid-boss seen in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake, where he is found in Burt The Bashful's Fort half-way through World 1. At the end of the fort, Yellow Yoshi encounters a Burt which is enlarged by Kamek, turning it into Burt the Bashful. To defeat him, Yellow Yoshi must hit him with eggs six times; with each hit, Burt's pants continue to fall off. When he is defeated, his pants entirely fall off and he turns red in embarrassment, blasts off and eventually implodes.

Burt's sprites depict him differently from his artwork; notably, he has one curled hair in his sprites, but two drooping hairs in his artwork. Said artwork is reused for the Big Burt Bros., and the same inconsistency applies with them.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

Burt the Bashful and the other castle bosses of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island cameo in the opening sequence of Yoshi's Island DS. Additionally, the mid-bosses of World 1, the Big Burt Bros., are based on him.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

Burt the Bashful later appears in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World as the boss of World 1 in Burt the Bashful's Castle. The battle takes place in a room with three yellow blocks and two red blocks, placed alternating so that the yellow blocks meet the walls. The room is wider than the width of the screen. At the start of the battle, Burt jumps across the room as in Yoshi's Island. This takes four jumps, with the last jump being very short He stops at either edge of the room then stomps in place to cause two red Shy Guys to fall from the top of the screen. They fall on the red blocks in the room. Burt destroys Shy Guys on contact, and his stomp will bring down fewer Shy Guys if there are Shy Guys present such that two Shy Guys is the maximum number. To damage Burt, Yoshi must first hit him with a yarn ball to stun him. Burt falls backward and a knot appears his pants. If Yoshi eats this knot, he unravels one third of Burt's pants, inflicting damage. Burt can also be knocked back and stunned using seeds from a watermelon, fire breath from a fire watermelon, and ice breath from a ice watermelon. Hitting Burt again knocks him back again and resets the length of the stun. Given time, Burt will recover, and the knot on his pants disappears as well.

After taking damage once, Burt the Bashful jumps to the nearest edge of the room and calls in two ball look-alikes of himself. The look-alikes are smaller than Burt the Bashful. All three of them stack up, such that Burt stands in the middle. They jump in order from top to bottom, landing in the center of the room, then repeating to go to the other side of the room. This means they only ever land on the yellow blocks. Once at the edge, Burt will stomp again to bring down Shy Guys If the look-alikes take damage, they get knocked into the foreground and out of the room. They can take damage in more ways than Burt can be stunned, including via kicking frozen Shy Guys into them or via ground-pound shockwaves from the "Power up Ground Pound!" Power Badge. If all look-alikes are defeated, Burt the Bashful switches back to normal jumping. If Burt gets stunned, then all look-alikes are instantly defeated. If Burt recovers from being stunned, he jumps to the nearest edge of the room and calls in a new set of look-alikes. After having the second third of his pants unraveled, Burt the Bashful repeats the process using four look-alikes, again stacked so that he is in the middle of their stack. By repeating the process, Yoshi can unknit the last portion of Burt's pants. Once done, Burt turns red from embarrassment and is defeated. He bounces around the room while shrinking, before vanishing in the center of the room. Burt vanishing leaves behind extra beads compared to other bosses.

Not including Baby Bowser, Burt the Bashful and Naval Piranha are the only two bosses from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island to make an appearance in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. Additionally, not including Mega Baby Bowser, Burt the Bashful is the only boss in Yoshi's Woolly World and Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World that does not need to be Ground Pounded to be defeated.

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]

While Burt does not appear in Yoshi's Crafted World, the player fights a similar boss called Burt the Ball, which is a rubber version of him.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Burt the Bashful also appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

In volume 14 of the Super Mario-kun, the volume based on Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, Burt the Bashful is the first boss Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi encounter. He bounces around, smashing Mario in the process. Yoshi also attacks and ends up failing. An Egg Plant assists them, but the Yoshi Eggs simply bounce off Burt (contrary to the games where the eggs are needed to damage Burt). Finally, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi grab and pull down Burt's pants, revealing his genitals. Ashamed, he shrinks and starts flying off as a deflated balloon, causing havoc to Mario and Luigi.
