Needlenose

The heading variety of Pokeys[1] are enemies in the Yoshi's Island series. They are small green cactuses with a face that bounce a Needlenose on their head.

History[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

They first appear in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3. If Yoshi defeats the Needlenose on its head, the Pokey frowns and lies down, becoming harmless. However, it produces another Needlenose shortly afterwards. Pokeys cannot be defeated, with the exception of an Anywhere POW.

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

This variety of Pokey reappears in Yoshi's New Island, alongside normal Pokeys, where they only appear in Underground Pokey Patrol. They act the same as previously.

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]

  • Shogakukan guide: 根っから明るいサボテン野郎も、サンボを取りあげるとムスッとしてしまう。でも、すぐに気を取り直すから心配ない。[2](Even the cactus guy, who is cheerful to the core, gets all sullen when you take away his Needlenose. But don't worry, he will soon compose himself.)
  • Player's Guide: Pokey frowns and pulls in his needles when you grab his bouncing prickly ball. He's harmless then.[1]

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

  • Shogakukan guide: 頭上のサンボを食べられるとムッとするが、すぐに次のサンボが現れる。本体にさわってもダメージを受けない代わりに、倒すこともできない。[3](It is miffed when the Needlenose above its head is eaten, but another Needlenose soon appears. If you touch the main body, you will not be damaged, but you will also not be able to defeat it.)

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

  • Shogakukan guide: 体の一部をヘディングしているサンボ。本体にはトゲがあり、踏んだり食べたりできない。ヘディングで上空に飛ばされている部分は、食べるとタマゴになる。[4](A Pokey with a heading on part of its body. The body has spines and cannot be stepped on or eaten. The part of the body that is flown into the air by heading becomes an egg when eaten.)
