Bucket (Yoshi's Island series) from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
First appearance Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995)
Latest appearance Yoshi's New Island (2014)

The Yoshi platform games feature special buckets, also referred to as ? Buckets,[1] that release items when hit with an egg. As reflected in their secondary name, they display a question mark in much the same manner as other item containers, such as Winged Clouds (a Yoshi staple) and ? Blocks (from Super Mario games).

History[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]

In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3, buckets tend to appear in fort or castle areas and levels, beginning with Burt The Bashful's Fort. These buckets can be found hanging on walls or ceilings, and the Yoshis can knock them down by throwing an egg at them. Most buckets in the game contain coins or enemies; to release them, the egg has to hit the bucket's lateral side, whereupon it flips over and drops its contents before falling off-screen. If struck from other sides, it abruptly falls off without producing anything. Some levels have empty buckets positioned over a body of water or lava, and knocking one down allows the Yoshi to cross that area by using the bucket until they reach the other end.

The eggs break on contact with a bucket; this can also occur while the bucket is falling, despite it being essentially non-functional in that state.

Yoshi's Story[edit]

In Yoshi's Story, buckets have the appearance of wooden wash basins and are found only already in the water during a section of Neuron Jungle. They are used in the same way, though they cannot pass through certain sections of the river under short platforms (which Yoshis can still swim through).

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

Yoshi's Island DS features buckets with the same appearance and function as in the original Yoshi's Island. They are predominantly found in huts within the course Spear Guys' Village Found!

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

In Yoshi's New Island, buckets retain their appearance from previous Yoshi's Island titles and function largely the same, with specific gameplay quirks: they may now additionally release Spring Balls and lose any interactivity while falling, i.e. thrown eggs pass through them in this state. The first course in this game to feature buckets is Fort Bucket Booby Trap; this course notably contains a special gold bucket that produces a giant Spring Ball, which Yoshi must use to reach the boss door.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

Empty wooden buckets similar to the Yoshi's Story ones appear in Plum Park in Paper Mario: Color Splash. Mario can ride inside them to safely traverse the poison water. A few empty buckets also appear as scenery in the hot springs of Redpepper Crater.
