Chapter 1[edit]

Chapter 1

ヨッシー全員ぜんいん集合しゅうごうベビーを救え!!のまき ("The Yoshis all reunite to save the Baby!")

Lakitu brings Baby Mario to Kamek in the Sky Castle, who in turn takes him to Bowser. As the seemingly-adult Bowser compliments Kamek, he hears cawing coming from his master and discovers it to be Raphael the Raven in disguise: the master went out ("to have fun", as Kamek rightfully presumes), leaving him alone with the babies. Baby Mario, finally off Lakitu's hook, demands that Baby Luigi is set free and to fight Bowser. Kamek uses his crystal ball to see where Bowser went: the crystal ball shows Bowser (revealed to still be a baby and not the imposing grow-up figure seen in the shadows until then) riding a Goonie and following the pelican with the baby girl that helped Mario, who is still hanging around since she has to wait for the Mario Bros. to be delivered before she can be born. Baby Bowser explains he saw her through a telescope and fell in love with her. In response, the girl states that hitting on a girl that is not even born yet is a perverted move. Stunned, Baby Bowser falls off his ride, while Kamek embarassly turns off the crystal ball.

Baby Bowser plummets down to the island, right next to the snow pile Poochy fell into. Having heard Baby Bowser's noise, Poochy gets out of the snow and starts running around, kicking Baby Bowser away and finding four other Yoshis trapped in ice. Licking off the ice, Poochy frees them: they thank the dog and present themselves as the noble Purple Yoshi, the effeminate Pink Yoshi, the clever but slow Yellow Yoshi, and the normal Brown Yoshi. Poochy uses snow sculptures to convey the situation to them. Later, after transforming into a Mole Tank, the Yoshis and Poochy reunite with Green, Red, Blue, and Light Blue. After some brainstorming, the Yoshis try to take down the castle by flinging a giant wooden stake with a giant slingshot, but it does nothing, so the Yoshis start to pile one onto another and, with a little boost from Poochy, they manage to reach the castle and the Green Yoshi on top uses his tongue to fling the entire pile up.

While Baby Mario tries to reunite with the Yoshi, Kamek activates the emergency system, which makes the castle and the cloud where it stands collapse, revealing a small little planet underneath. Everyone on the cloud, except for Kamek, Raphael and the Yoshis, fall down. Green Yoshi manages to catch Baby Mario with his tongue, while Poochy falls towards his demise. Kamek departs to look for Bowser, leaving the Yoshis to Raphael. With his ability to create lightning bolts every step he makes, Raphael manages to make most of the Yoshis fall off the planet. Only Green Yoshi and Baby Mario remain. Unable to hurt him with the eggs, Yoshi slips off the side of the planet, landing on the stake they planted against the cloud, now stuck in the planet, and losing Baby Mario. Floating inside the bubble, Baby Mario sees that Raphael is located on the other side of the stake's stump, and tells Yoshi to jab it. Yoshi executes, and Raphael gets stabbed by the stake on the other side. Hurt, Raphael flies off into the sky. Yoshi celebrates his victory, only to realize that Baby Mario's bubble is floating away too towards the sky, to "where everybody is waiting". Baby Mario waves goodbye to Yoshi, left stranded on the planet, and he does not even get the time to mourn the loss of his friends and the baby, as a giant Baby Bowser looms behind him.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

ヒーローベビー あしたのためにそのいちのまき ("The Baby: For the sake tomorrow part 1")

The giant Baby Bowser nabs Yoshi from the planet and then returns to his original stature to ride him. At first, Yoshi tries to take advantage of the shrunk down Baby Bowser, but Kamek arrives and magically bridles him, turning him into Baby Bowser's steed, informing him that any form of rebellion will result in the bridles to tighten up. He does try to have the bridles removed when Baby Bowser asks him to turn into a Mole Tank, by explaining he needs to drink vinegar for that, but Baby Bowser gives him through the nostrils. When Kamek asks what he intends to do with the Mole Tank, Baby Bowser explains he wants to create a magma flow and turn Yoshi's Island into a place fit for a Koopa King.

Meanwhile, Baby Mario is taken by his bubble to a strange place in the sky, while a halo appears over his head. A Grunt appears, explaining that they are at the gates of Hell and Heaven, but since Baby Mario has not been born yet, he needs to go back. Baby Mario obeys, but a line of Blow Hards shoots Needlenoses at him. Instinctively, Baby Mario calls for Yoshi's help, before remembering he is on his own. The Grunt explains that he cannot always relay on others to progress, but that around him he can always find an ally. In fact, Baby Mario spots a Egg Plant and uses the eggs it spawns to defeat the Blow Hards. Before he can even get across them, a bunch of Nipper Spores spawn a bunch of Nipper Plants, forcing Baby Mario to retreat, despite the Grunt pushing him to fight as he cannot continue towards the afterlife. A Zeus Guy appears to train him on how to throw punches ("For the sake of tomorrow part 1") and the secret karate technique: there are no first strikes, nor stances, therefore there are no secret techniques ("For the sake of tomorrow part 2"). Baby Mario succeeds and manages to defeat the enemy blockades. Witnessing his success, the Zeus Guy disappears, reavling himself to be the spirit of Mas Oyama, while the Grunt gifts Baby Mario of his last Star, before sending him back to Yoshi's Island, now reduced to a mamga-filled wasteland.

Back on Earth, Baby Mario takes a few eggs from an Egg Plant, then encounters a dried-up Lunge Fish, whose pond was left barren following the rise of magma levels. As he asks who created this mess, Baby Bowser appears along with Kamek and Yoshi. Baby Mario recognizes him as the "kid that was rejected by a girl in diapers", while he explains he turned the island into a volcanic area to create lots of hot springs for him and his crush, hoping for a "mixed bath moment" (to which he gets slapped by the baby girl with a paper fan, flying by with her pelican). The Mole Tank transformation ends, and Yoshi returns to his normal state. Baby Bowser orders him to attack Baby Mario, but Yoshi refuses and faints from the pain of the bridles tightening up around his snout. Baby Mario lies that Yoshi has to eat sweet potatoes all year round, so that bridle is hindering him. Believing him, Baby Bowser kicks away Yoshi, and Baby Mario rescues him, feeding a sweet egg taken by the Egg Plant to put him back in shape and full of energies. Furious for being tricked, Baby Bowser orders Kamek to make him bigger, and Kamek turns into a giant, specifying that this time the magic will last longer than before. Yoshi takes Baby Mario and tries to run for it, but Kamek blocks them by summoning a giant Tap-Tap mech. Baby Mario and Yoshi and Yoshi are surrounded by two large and giant enemies, and the situation becomes more and more bleak.

Real-life people[edit]

  • Rie Tomosaka: Japanese actress and pop-star Rie Tomosaka is briefly namedropped by Yoshi at the end of chapter 1 when he mistakes the looming Mega Baby Bowser for her. At the start of the second chapter, Baby Bowser continues the gag by asking if it was due to the big lower lip, while Yoshi tells him they should stop continuing a joke from the last chapter.
  • Akiko Hinagata: upon Kamek's arrival, Yoshi also mentions Japanese actress and then-gravure idol Akiko Hinagata, likely referring to her role as one of the first victims in the 1995 TV drama Ring, where she takes on a horrifying expression upon death.
  • Mas Oyama: the Zeus Guy reveals himself to be the spirit of Korean-Japanese boxer Mas Oyama, founder of the Kyokushin Karate style.

Fictional works[edit]

  • Tomorrow's Joe: chapter 2's title and Zeus Guy's training are named after chapters (and episodes) of the Tomorrow's Joe manga (and anime) series.
  • Mobile Suit Gundam Wing: Baby Bowser's treat of killing Baby Mario and Yoshi is stated to be said in a "Gundam style". This refers to the ending of the first episode of "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing," when the protagonist Heero Yuy attempts to kill Relena Darlian’s romantic interest in him on the spot. This scene is also accompanied by a fanart (credited to a highschool girl from Nagano Prefecture) of Relena hitting Heero with a slipper for "teaching such things to a baby", while in a corner their friend Chang Wufei eyerolls at their fight.

A word from the author
Since this series started, I've noticed myself thinking in baby talk, like "Oh, the traffic light is red!" even when I'm walking down the street. I'm scared I'll start saying it out loud soon... no, I'm really scared!
