Mario is now mayor of Mario City, with Yoshi as his secretary. Unfortunately, Bowser has begun to target the city with his monsters. Stressed, Mario asked for help, and the from the sky something was delivered to him: the Henshin Capsule that dispense power-ups that turn him into Super Mario Great. Luigi has also used this power and created the Great Defense Force and its base in a Yoshi-shaped island, reachable by a secret tunnel in the mayor office. Now, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Yoshi are ready for whatever Bowser throws at them.

Chapter 1[edit]

Chapter 1

仰天ぎょうてん無敵むてき超人ちょうじんあらわる!! (Shocking! An invincible superhero appears!!)

Mario is the mayor of Mario City, a prosperous megalopolis with more than 500'000 citizen. While happily playing to Yoshi on his Game Boy, Mario claims that he could die happily. Right then, an enormous statue falls onto his office skyscraper, squashing him. As Mario realizes he has become a ghost, the statue, baring a striking resemblance to him, presents itself as "Super Mario Great, the messenger of justice" who came from space to give him a capsule, telling him to use it in case of an emergency. Mario wakes up in his destroyed office, the statue gone. Yoshi, his secretary, informs him that a giant monster is destroying the town. Seeing the monster, Mario recognize him as Bowser the Turtle: 10 years ago, while on a beach trip with Peach and Daisy, the two of them were messing with a turtle, and while Mario stopped them, informing that turtles suffer when flipped upside down (showing them), the three of them leave without first flipping it on his belly. That turtle was Bowser and now it is back and thirsting for revenge. Just as he finishes explaining, the giant Bowser burn the office with his Fire Breath.

Luckily for Mario and Yoshi, the latter activated a secret chute that takes them to the underground Great Defense Force base, built by Luigi, the ministry of defense. Predicting the kaiju attacks, Luigi founded the Great Defense Force to fight back the monsters, such as the fighting jet Yoshi Bird 1-gō. The bad news is that Luigi is the only member of the squad, so Mario and Yoshi must join him. As Luigi does his best at his first time piloting the jet, Mario and Yoshi employ a giant slingshot to hit the giant Bowser, but the boulders thrown are pebbles compared to him, and Yoshi is also flung by the slingshot onto the beast's horn. Meanwhile, the beast is stomping over the BomBom Yōchien, forcing the teacher and her students to hid in a bunker. Through a megaphone, Mario tries to warn Bowser that if he is looking for the girls that tormented him ten years ago, he will not find them in a school. Hearing this, Bowser changes the plan: he will instead marry the two now-adult girls (something Mario and Luigi are also yearning). Furious, Yoshi tries to punch some sense into Bowser by climbing his face, but he is forced to retreat into the school bunker while escaping the beast's flames, causing the entrance to be blocked by the rubbles.

Yoshi communicates with Mario about the kids and his situation, so Mario lands on the ground with the Yoshi Bird 2-gō, a drill vehicle which Mario uses to tunnel to the bunker. While boarding the kids, the vehicle reach full capacity, so Mario decides to cross the tunnel afoot, while Yoshi will take the kids and the teacher out, but a stomp from Bowser causes a cave-in onto him. Trapped by the rubbles, Mario sees the capsule the statue gave him and uses it: a Mushroom appears, and by eating it, Mario becomes the muscular and giant Super Mario Great. Bowser tries to burn him, but Great stomps the kaiju, causing it to explode, revealing its robotic nature. As Great disappear, Mario emerges from the smoke caused by the fight: neither the citizens nor enemy have put together that Mario and Great are the same.

While Mario ensures his friends that Super Mario Great will not let Bowser ruin their happiness, in space, the real Bowser has lost connection to his kaiju robot, promising to target the Mushroom Kingdom next.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

炸裂さくれつ!ファイヤーマリオビーム!! (Boom! Fire Mario Beam!!)

At the Great Defense Force base, the computers register that a meteorite is approaching Earth and its collision course is right in the middle of the Mushroom Kingdom. The squad, taking the Yoshi Bird 1-gō, fly to the kingdom, where panic is already spreading. While Princess Peach tries to calm her subjects, the meteor crashes right at her feet, revealing itself to be a giant robotic Sumo Brother: the KK Robo. After karate-chopping the Yoshi Bird, the Sumo Bro eats the princess, trapping her in its head, where she comes face to face with a strange figure that claims to be God. He explains that 10 years ago, Peach made a very bad thing: she kicked a small turtle on his back, and now the KK Robo is terrorizing her kingdom. Peach explains that she did that to save a tiny Wiggler that was going to be munched by the turtle, but then God counter-claims that the turtle was left on his back, starving for 10 days, but now that the turtle is growing into the "fabulous" Koopa King Bowser, everything will be forgiven if she marries him. At this, Peach starts crying and her cries reach the same Wiggler she saved 10 years ago, grown into a giant, now ready to repay her debt, plucks her flower and goes to save the princess.

With Peach's refusal, God has no choice but to let KK Robo destroy the town with its fiery stomps. Right then, a tsunami provoked by the Mega Wiggler hits the town, killing the fire, and while the Yoshi Bird takes off, God takes off his costume to check outside, revealing to be Bowser. Peach tries to escape, but Bowser catches her and ties her up, while the two titans go one on one against each other and the Defense Force spots Bowser. Using the Yoshi Bird 3-gō, Mario and Yoshi gets near the KK Robo's leg and creates a hole for Mario to enter to rescue Peach. As the fight goes on, Bowser orders the KK Robo to use thunderstorm on the Mega Wiggler, making her faint. Seeing her ally down, Peach also faints, while Mario barges in the control room. Pretending to surrender, Bowser let Mario take the princess. As he picks her up, Bowser kicks Mario outside the robot's nostril. Mario plummets, while Peach (still tied up) remains hanged by the rope. As he falls to his demise, Mario grabs the Henshin Capsule and activates it, gaining a Fire Flower and turning into Fire Mario Great.

Unable to put together that Mario and Super Mario Great are the same person, Bowser threatens the "new arrival" to back off, since Peach is still hanging, but Yoshi comes to save her on the Yoshi Bird 3-gō. Fire Mario Great manages to avoid the Thunderstorm attack, then goes for a blow with the elbow, but the KK Robo still stands: Bowser explains that he has designed his new kaiju to absorb his attacks, but Mario has a solution to that and charges up a powerful beam attack that overcharges the robot until it explodes. Bowser flees on a rocket ship hidden in the KK Robo's spike, claiming that it is not over. With Bowser dealt with, Mario goes to rescue the Mega Wiggler, by placing the Fire Flower on her head, waking her up. As Peach rejoice and hugs Mega Wiggler, Mario returns to normal and Peach, her too unaware that he was Super Mario Great, claims that Mario has arrived late, but also asks to join the Great Defense Force.

Next stop: Sarasaland, to protect Princess Daisy.

Chapter 3[edit]

Chapter 3

恐怖きょうふGグレート暗殺あんさつ指令しれい!! (Horror! Great Assassination Directive!!)

While Bowser is studying a video of Super Mario Great dealing with a Swooper kaiju, a Ninji notices that Mario's hat emblem blinks and beeps after three minutes, meaning that Super Mario Great can only be active for that amount of time, or something might happen to him. Willing to test this theory, Bowser gives Ninji the role of chief supervisor on the attack on Sarasaland.

Meanwhile, the Great Defense Force arrive at Daisy's Castle, with Tatanga's forces ready to protect it from kaiju, while Peach stretches Daisy's face to "ensure she is not Bowser in disguise". Right then, Luigi informs that a kaiju arrived: the Chitei Kaijū Indy. Mario runs to transform in a hidden place, but he accidentally drops the Henshin Capsule which Luigi picks up and accidentally activates, transforming into Great. With his powers, Luigi tries to defeat the kaiju, but the enemy, instructed by Ninji attached on his back, is too fast for him, and when the cap starts blinking, the Chitei Kaijū Indy goes for the kill, throwing Luigi into the sea. Ninji jumps off the kaiju and carefully approaches the enemy line to kidnap Daisy. Bowser arrives and orders the Defense Force to surrender, or he will kill Great, showing off that, due to have been in that form too much, the giant hero has been encased in a crystal cross.

Mario and Yoshi quickly gets the Yoshi Bird 1-gō to reach him, but as they approach it, they discover it is a hologram: the real Great is still crucified in a crystal on the bottom of the ocean (and, to no one else acknowledgement, he has returned to his normal Luigi form). Mario dives in with the Yoshi Bird 4-gō submarine, while Bowser drops various aquatic minions in the sea to stop him. Meanwhile, the Ninji tries to snatch both princesses, but small as he is, he calls the kaiju to help it. After the monster squashes Tatanga, it eats the princesses. Mario finally reaches Luigi, chisels Luigi out of the crystal and grabs the capsule, just as Yoshi informs him what the monster did to the princesses.

With the capsule dispensing him a Cape Feather, Caped Mario Great flies out of the sea, surprising everyone, and with a Spin Attack knocks the sunglasses out of the kaiju. Blinded by the sun, the kaiju cover its eyes, while Mario takes the sunglasses, which are cybernetics, and discovers the locations of the princesses in the monster's belly. Taking off his cape, Great throws it at the kaiju, cutting it in half and releasing the princesses, but Bowser swoops in with the Koopa Clown Car and takes them, then warps away to his hideout on the Kame Star, a star located at the edge of the universe, claiming that he is going to marry them.

With the Ninji traumatized by the slaughter (and the princesses offended to be called "heavy" when he attempted to kidnapped them), it is willing to become a good guy and guide the heroes to Bowser's hideout. Mario (having dived back in the submarine before the transformation expired) asks Yoshi to summon the Yoshi Bird 5-gō rocket, which he does by eating the Yoshi Bird 1-gō and spitting out the rocket ship. As the rocket departs, Luigi wakes up, talking on how he dreamt of being Super Mario Great.

Final chapter[edit]

Chapter 4

さらば!スーパーマリオGグレート!! (Farewell! Super Mario Great!!)

On Kame Star, Bowser is getting ready for his double wedding with the princesses, in front of the statue of Koopa Daimyōjin, while the princesses are sure that Great will come to save them (possibly even marry them), even ignoring the ceremony to watch recordings of his heroic deeds. Meanwhile, the Yoshi Bird 5-gō has reached Saturn but has still a long way to arrive to Bowser's lair, but without a warping device, they will need Great's abilities. Hidden in the airlock, Mario activates the capsule and, in his caped form, warp the rocketship near Kame Star, before returning to normal and back in the ship. However, someone has spotted Great turning into Mario and putting the Henshin Capsule in his pocket. The rocket ship passes nearby a space capsule, from which comes a call for help: a beautiful girl of the Space Police Patrol Troop is picked up by the Defense Force. She claims to have been sent to stop Bowser but was defeated by him, so Mario and Yoshi welcomes the new ally, and when Ninji raises suspicions, they claim that "beautiful ladies cannot be bad guys." To approach the astral body, Yoshi summons the Yoshi Bird 6-gō, a paddle-like spaceship. Mario jumps in, unaware that the space trooper has just swiped the Henshin Capsule.

After the Yoshi Bird 6-gō is sent out, the trooper hides in a corner to contact Bowser that Great has been dealt with. Ninji appears behind her: still suspicious of her, Ninji spotted her stealing something from Mario's pocket and orders her to surrender it. The girl does so, but then she screams, accusing the Ninji of molesting her. When Ninji tries to explain himself, Luigi wakes up and, recognizing the capsule from his "dream", explains that is something that turns you into Super Mario Great. When Ninji then tells Yoshi and Luigi to tie up her, they instead tie him up, re-claiming that beautiful ladies cannot be bad guys. Angered by them and the girl sticking her tongue at him, the Ninji headbutts the trooper, breaking off her disguise and revealing her to be Wendy. Using her rings, she binds Luigi and Yoshi, takes the capsule back, and ejects Ninji into space for his double-crossing.

Warned by Mario's arrival, Bowser turns the orbiting asteroids into breakable blocks that traps the Yoshi Bird 6-gō in a small area, then shoots cannonballs at it. Mario manages to dodge them, but the Ninji, floating towards him, tells him to deflect them, as they are bouncy. Doing so, Mario breaks through the barrier and blocks and even hits Bowser, but right then Wendy arrives, and tells him that his allies are hostages of her and he lost the Henshin Capsule. After noticing that, Mario surrenders, and the Defense Force is brought in binds to the wedding. After convincing the princesses he was Great the whole time, Bowser can finally begin the ceremony, but Mario has one last trump card: he rescued the floating Ninji and he hid in Mario's shadow with his ninjitsu skill. Snatching back the capsule from Wendy, he uses it on Mario, turning him into Super Mario Great. As the princesses run to him and Ninji frees Luigi and Yoshi, Bowser starts praying to the Koopa Daimyōjin statue for a power that can destroy his nemesis: the diety grants his wishes, turning him into the titan-sized and cybernetically enhanced Koopa Seven.

While the heroes run to safety on the Yoshi Bird 5-gō, Super Mario Great is left dealing with Bowser, and loses the fight after he uses the Kameriumu Kōsen attack as his cap starts blinking. Not wanting to put Mario at risk, Great separates him from his body, while his own giant starts losing consciousness. Unable to accept this ending, Mario gives him the Muteki Star Bracelet, granting him the invincible form. More powerful than ever, Star Mario Great deflects Koopa Seven's attacks, pound him senseless, and finally blows him up. With Bowser finished once and for all, Super Mario Great's mission has finally ended and he can finally return home on the G78 Nebula, while the rest of the Great Defense Force wave him goodbye.

Mototin's Picture Diary[edit]

モトちんのスーパーファミコンかいじゅう絵日記えにっき (Mototin's Super Famicom Monster Picture Diary)

Instead of the usual 4-koma, this time a photo collage is presented, related to how Mototin loved kaiju media.

In elementary, Mototin was a self-proclaimed monster doctor, then in high-school he made a fan-film inspired by Ultraman, and finally he was so proud to handshake Godzilla's statue at the Godzilla vs. Mothra premiere, happy that his job as a mangaka made this act normal to other's eyes.
