Super Mario Kart 2 is the seventeenth volume of Kodansha's Super Mario manga published under the KC Deluxe label.

This volume is the second adaptation of Super Mario Kart. Instead of focusing on the race cups like the previous volume, this one focuses for the first half on the battle mode, then on an original story in the second one.

The volume also introduces the "Go! Go! Mario Paint Theater!" (「GOゴーGOゴー!マリオペイントシアター!」, Gō! Gō! Mario Peinto Shiatā!, originally titled 「GOゴーGOゴー!マリオペイント」, "GO! GO! Mario Paint"), a miniseries of short stories based around Mario Paint that was originally serialized on Deluxe BomBom. Each volume adds one or more chapters from this miniseries, replacing the bonus content like the 4-koma and puzzles activities.

Chapter 1

SUPERスーパー BATTLEバトル MODEモード ピーチひめ争奪杯そうだつカップ前編ぜんぺん〕(Super Battle Mode - Princess Peach Battle Cup (Part 1))

Everyone that took part at the BomBom and Special Cups are invited to Princess Peach's castle with their karts. Once there, arguments arise, until Peach calms everybody down: she has invited them to play a game. Against Yoshi's hopes for it to be Yoshi's Cookie (already sad that the manga adaptation was skipped), Peach and the king explain that it is Battle Mode, attaching balloons to their karts. Bowser asks what is the prize of this competition, and the king jokingly said that his daughter will be the prize. Before he can backtrack from this statement, Mario, Luigi, Toad, Bowser, Donkey Kong Jr., Yoshi, and Koopa Troopa are already trying to pop the rival's balloons. To solve this, Peach decides to join the competition to undo the prize, but only one balloon is left for her. Before she can go, Daisy appears, disappointed that she was not invited, but Peach runs over her, upsetting her.

While the boys are still trying to crash into each other, Peach enters the fight and eliminates Luigi with a Shell and a Star, explaining to the others that they can get other items around Toad Town, in places signed with a question mark sign, where the people at the spot will make them fish out a random item from a container. During this excursion through town, Mario fishes his item (a Feather) by Lady at her auto repair shop, unaware that Daisy and her assistant Otaku-chan are taking pictures of the two, before getting run over by Bowser. Meanwhile, Yoshi gets distracted by the local school sports day event, but by stealing cookies from the kids, they get their revenge by popping all three of his balloons, eliminating him. Peach finds a Feather, but she accidentally jumps into the river, floating away.

After a while, the remaining contestants arrive in an enclosed area. Scared by the competition, Toad and Koopa Troopa forfeit. Right after that, Bowser and Junior start throwing Green Shells and Bananas all around and soon, everyone's balloon are down to one. To avoid an incoming shell, Mario uses his Feather and jumps off the area, while the shell bounce off the border and hits Donkey Kong Junior, eliminating him. After a Lakitu brings Mario back inside the area, only Bowser and Mario remains, as they go towards the last remaining item point, a Red Shell appears behind them. After dodging it with a tactical swerve, Bowser gets hit and eliminated.

The match is over, and Peach (who threw the shell undetected thanks to the Ghost) is ready to accept Mario as the winner, but Daisy appears, with a photo of Mario and Lady kissing each other. Despite the photo being clearly edited, Peach directs her fury towards Mario, bombarding him with shells, not only eliminating him but also nearly killing him. Right then, Bowser appears on the Cheep Cheep blimp and takes Peach away with a crane, claiming that he will marry her at his castle.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

SUPERスーパー BATTLEバトル MODEモード ピーチひめ争奪杯そうだつカップ後編こうへん〕(Super Battle Mode - Princess Peach Battle Cup (Part 2))

As Bowser flies away with Peach, she screams for help, specifying that Mario is not welcome to save her. At this, Mario gets depressed, while Lady passes him another feather and a P Balloon, telling him that he needs to do his best to clear this misunderstanding and if he wants to beat the other racers, that are already zipping to Bowser's Castle. Approaching the castle, Bowser reveal to Peach that he will marry her, showing off a wedding ring with a giant diamond that leaves the princess speechless. Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong Jr., and Yoshi arrive at Bowser's Castle, but the road is a maze, full of lava pits and traps, and to worsen the situation, Bowser launches a Choropū-dan, causing Monty Moles to rain on the racers. With the rodents covering their view, Yoshi and Junior crash into each other and die.

With only the Mario Bros. remaining, Bowser attempts to mock them by telling them that he gave Peach the "ring that makes you want to marry Bowser", that is impossible to remove and brainwash the wearer to love Bowser forever. Unfortunately, this backfires, as Peach did not put it on yet. As Peach is now fighting from Bowser trying to force her to wear the ring, Mario removes the Moles from Luigi's kart, telling him to do his best in rescuing Peach. Luigi nods and enters the palace, only to be squished to death by a Thwomp. The shock from the Thwomp falling, causes Bowser to drop the ring right behind the enemy, in a narrow passage between it and the wall. After getting rid of the Moles, Mario gets near the Thwomp and, paying respect to his brother, he offers all the coins in his pocket, causing him to shrink and pass right into the narrow crack between the Thwomp and the wall.

Once out, Mario uses a Mushroom to grow back to his normal size, discovering that he took the ring with him. Bowser demands it back, but Mario tosses it at Birdo, who mysteriously pops out of the ground. While Bowser is occupied getting rid of a clingy gay dinosaur, Mario go to rescue Peach, who in seeing him not mad because she (literally) jumped the gun at the cheating accusation, forgives him. Using the feather, Mario gets out of the castle, but Bowser is not done yet. First he tries to sic them his Dry Bones, but they are repelled by the ghosts of Luigi, Yoshi, and Junior, so he orders them to fuse into a skull-themed kart. Chasing down Mario, Bowser throws Spike Balls at him, popping his tires and sending them out of the trail. While hanging onto Peach's dress, Bowser also falls down in the lava pit with them, but Mario saves himself and Peach by inhaling the P Balloon and turning into Balloon Mario.

Bowser and Peach's dress falls in the lava, while Mario and Peach float back to the Mushroom Kingdom, crashing into a tent. Once they emerged, they discovered to have crashed into a wedding and, having accidentally fall into the spouses outfit, are mistaken for the happy couple. Going with the flow, Mario and Peach proceed with the ceremony and then go to their honeymoon on Rainbow Road. About the deceased pilots, Luigi explains to them that they just need to float back into their bodies and they will return to life. Meanwhile, Daisy is upset that she was ultimately left in the sidelines, while Otaku-chan consoles her by telling her that at least she appeared more than the King.

Chapter 3[edit]

Chapter 3

SUPERスーパー BATTLEバトル MODEモード ゆめのおたからさがしカップ前編ぜんぺん〕(Super Battle Mode - Dream Treasure Hunt Cup (Part 1))

Mario, Luigi, and Peach decide to take a vacation on the beach of the Southern regions of the kingdom. While Mario and Luigi are bickering on which of the two bikinis they bought Peach will choose and wear, she finds a floating message in a bottle containing a map to the treasure of Gilgamesh Archipelago. Suspending the swimming trip, Peach organize a treasure hunt and start hiring a crew. A lot of people come to join, only for them to disappear in fear after hearing the destination's name. When Peach asks why the people are gone, Yosshīdamusu appears, explaining that the god Poseidon Koopa rules over the waters of Gilgamesh Archipelago, insisting that she cancels the treasure hunt. In response, Peach and the Mario Bros. bound and gag him to the mast. While traveling to Gilgamesh Archipelago, Mario interview the few volunteers left: Toad, Koopa Troopa, Boo, and Yoshi, whose skills are not really that useful.

After arriving, the group hops into Peach's automobile and go to explore the island (still leaving Yosshīdamusu tied up on the ship). The first clue of the map asks to find the "Big nose rock". After locating the spot, Peach blows the area up and reveals a giant clam. The clam opens, revealing Ningyo-hime. As she flirts with Mario, Peach abruptly asks her where is the treasure, but Daisy points at herself, the map even specifically stated to be a "map to a treasure-d princess". Right then, Poseidon Koopa appears, claiming to have sealed the mermaid away (mostly because she begged to have more scenes). Peach states that it is not worthy to face the wrath of a god for such shallow woman, until she explains that she can give them the mermaid tribe treasure. Convinced, the crew and Daisy jumps into Peach's car and start driving away, but Poseidon Koopa also calls for his vehicle and start chasing them.

With a well-aimed shell, Bowser sends the crew's car into the sea, where the chase continues, as Daisy explains that if they reach her house in mermaid territory, Poseidon Koopa will not be able to harm them. Mario shakes Yoshi for some eggs and throws them at Poseidon Koopa, and then he throws Koopa Troopa at him, hitting everytime. Angry, Poseidon Koopa summons a Giant Red Shell, but Boo steals it and passes it to Mario and hits Poseidon Koopa once more, cracking his helmet and forcing him to retreat. With Poseidon Koopa defeated, the heroes safely reach the mermaid's house, but she just shows them another treasure map, that will take them to the Mermaid tribe's treasure.

Chapter 4[edit]

Chapter 4

SUPERスーパー BATTLEバトル MODEモード ゆめのおたからさがしカップ後編こうへん〕(Super Battle Mode - Dream Treasure Hunt Cup (Part 2))

The map is a heart-shaped tablet that shows that a spiral will lead to a guardian god with a magic elixir that is able to grant anyone's wish. Just then, Poseidon Koopa returns and attacks Ningyo-hime's house. With one of the windows broken, Poseidon Koopa's living cape lunges inside and steals the tablet, then starts to drive away. Pulling a lever, Ningyo-hime parts the waters, drying up a passage to chase down the deity. To stop them, Poseidon Koopa plants a no-entry sign in the middle of the road, and Luigi follows its instruction, much to Mario's exasperation. Daisy pulls another lever, and a maze forms in the middle of the sea.

After catching up to Poseidon Koopa, Mario asks Koopa Troopa to enter his shell to use as a projectile, but due to a crack, Koopa cannot do another shot. When asking Boo if he can steal the tablet, he states that he needs to build up a lot of energy, and Yoshi is starving and without food to process into eggs, they are at an impasse. Koopa Troopa points out that Toad is the only crew member that has not proved that he is useful, but his special skill is to resemble a mushroom. Asking if beside the resemblance he shares the effects of mushrooms, Toad offers his mushroom cap to use as a Dash Mushroom. After biting of two pieces, the crew's car reach Bowser and crashes into it, breaking it apart and revealing Bowser under the Poseidon Koopa disguise and a Pipe Frame inside the deity's car. Mario grabs the tablet that flew off Bowser's claws and drives to shore, as Ningyo-hime pull back the levers, causing the water maze to close and trapping him under the sea.

As the crew celebrates, Luigi notices that Mario retrieved half of the tablet: it got broken during the crash and only the direction to the treasure remained, but not how to find it. While everyone try to remember what to do after, the crew jumps back into Peach's car to find the spiral. After finding the spiral mountain, the heroes climb it and find a lever on the top. After pulling it, a rainbow appears, leading them to a cloud. Ningyo-hime remains on land, claiming that mermaids are cursed to not go far from the sea. Once on the cloud, the crew finds a giant statue similar to Donkey Kong Jr. semi-buried in the ground, the guardian, but have no idea where the magic elixir is. Just then, Bowser appears, carried by a bunch of Paragoombas. Survived the drowning, Bowser shows off he has the second half of the tablet, and with a Bob-omb uncovers the treasure in the buried hand of the statue: a giant Banana Peel.

Bowser attempts to remove it, but the statue's grip is sturdy. Furious, Bowser starts kicking the statue and, to mock it even more, starts to scribble on it with a marker and placing objects in the nostril and on the head, but the tipping point is when he defecates on it. Angry, the divine statue comes to life and squashes Bowser, then directs its rageful attention to the heroes. They try to escape, but the rainbow vanishes before their eyes. From the mountain, Ningyo-hime tells Mario to use the tablet and put them in a heart-shaped crevice in the guardian's armor. Mario does so by jumping off the car and the guardian becomes peaceful again. Mario has earned the possibility to grant his wish. Claiming that the mermaid gave them the map, she should have her wish granted. The statue obeys and "reading into her mind" it squeezes the banana oil onto Daisy, grants her wish to turn her human. Everyone is happy but Daisy, claiming that her wish was to conquer the world. Embarassed, the statue turns into sand and is blown away by the sand, as Daisy chases it down.

The story ends with Yosshīdamusu explaining how the now-human Mermaid princess became the Princess of Sarasaland.

GO! GO! Mario Paint Theater![edit]

Mario Paint Theater

GOゴーGOゴー!マリオペイント (GO! GO! Mario Paint)

Princess Peach is holding a Mario Paint tournament at her castle. Everyone but Bowser is excited for it, claiming that art is a childish pass time. Peach explains to the participants that later the Master Motoyama will review their work and the best art will be declared the winner.

Koopa Troopa tries to draw a Bob-omb, but it explodes, so he decides to pose for a nude self-portrait, disgusting the others. Mario goes to see how Yoshi is doing, and deletes his work after seeing that the subjects are them in a ridiculizing role reversal (luckily, it was already saved on the save file). Luigi is working on an animation, with Peach posing as a fire breathing kaiju. Peach goes to Mario, telling him to stop distracting others at to focus on his own work, but he has already done it, calling it the best piece of art: a well-done self-portrait.

Mischievously, Bowser goes to Mario's station and edits the work into a messy jumbled-up portrait with random icons. Master Motoyama arrives and, after some reviewing, declares Mario's abstract self-portrait the winner. Everyone cheers for Mario, while he looks in confusion "his" work and Bowser grumbles in frustration in the back.

Cameos from third-party characters[edit]

  • Poseidon (Greek mythology) and Yaminorius III (Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger): Bowser's alter-ego, Poseidon Koopa, has the name and role from the Greek sea god, but the costume and weapon is instead based off the antagonist of the animated shōnen mecha television series Genki Bakuhatsu Ganbaruger.
  • The Birth of Venus: when the heroes finds Ningyo-hime, she emerges from the clam she was trapped inside of by posing like Venus in Botticelli's painting.
