Howard Lincoln Answers Your Questions (referred to as Nintendo Power Source Online Questions For Howard Lincoln on the webpage) is a Q&A session with Howard Lincoln, the then-chairman of Nintendo. Some of the questions asked and answers provided involve games in the Super Mario franchise, specifically Super Mario 64, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart 64, and Super Mario Kart.
Website description[edit]
- When we asked the readers of Nintendo Power Source to conduct an interview with Nintendo of America's Chairman, Howard Lincoln, we had no idea of two things: how many questions you would ask, and how long it would take to get the answers posted.
- We ended up with over 800 pages worth of questions which we sorted down to the most frequently asked questions (hey -- he's got a company to run. Did you expect a personal reply?).
- And now, we finally have the answers ready for you. Thanks to everyone who participated in this interview!
Questions relating to the Super Mario franchise[edit]

- Subject: Bulky Drive/DVD
- Since DVD's[sic] will contain over 7 gigs of memory (over 10 times that of the current CD's) and it will be extremely fast (diminishing access time), why doesn't Nintendo ditch the Bulky-Drive (which will only contain less than 1/10 of a CD) for a DVD Drive (which will allow for cheaper, longer games, and little, if any, access time)?
- A: We have no plans to incorporate DVD technology. And, while DVD reportedly will hold a lot of data, Nintendo has always maintained that data storage is not the key point to providing great games. Super Mario 64 is being hailed as the greatest game of all time -- and it's not because of the number of bits. It's because the game is a lot of fun. So, Nintendo will remain focused on creating fun games which we think we do better than anyone else in the world.

- Mr. Lincoln, What do you think Nintendo 64's next hit is going to be? (ex: DK Country for SNES)
- A: Our next big title to be released is just around the corner...Mario Kart 64.[sic] The game was launched in Japan in December and already is a 1.5 million unit seller. You may have played Mario Kart for the Super NES. Based on feedback I've received from game testers here at Nintendo, you'll be in for quite a wild ride with this one. And, Mario Kart 64 is just the beginning -- there will be many A+ titles coming out this year. Keep checking in with Nintendo Power Source for the latest release information.

- I like many of your Nintendo games yet I wonder why you don't make the software available to PC systems. Sure the PC's may not be able to give the kind of graphics your system can yet if it is close, people like me would love to buy them. A good example is the Zelda series which I love and I wish I could purchase for my PC (preferably playable with Windows 95).
- A: Nintendo is committed to developing software for the dedicated console market. As you have probably seen with a game like Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64, you can't get those graphics and that game play on a PC. The Nintendo 64 is a very powerful machine and is specifically designed for playing games only. The PC isn't. While there are some popular games for the PC, we believe that the truly revolutionary games will only be found on a dedicated system such as the Nintendo 64.

- Do you really enjoy playing the Nintendo 64. Do you like the Games[sic]? Have you ever been abducted by Aliens[sic]? Do you like Mustard or Ketchup on Hamburgers[sic]? Have you ever flown in a Concord[sic] Jet? Do you enjoy Bungee Jumping[sic]? Have you ever been shot? Are you secretly an alien from Pluto planning to corrupt your users[sic] young minds so they will be helpless when your barbarian hordes come down and take over the world?
- A: Yes, I enjoy playing N64, but I'm not a very good game player. I really like Super Mario 64. I haven't yet been abducted by aliens. . . but I'm available! I like mustard on hamburgers. I've been tempted a few times to fly the Concorde, but haven't been able to figure out a good business reason to incur the extra expense. No. I haven't been shot and I don't care for guns. Yes, my Alaska fishing buddies think I came from Pluto. Actually, they have a lot of strange thoughts!
