"Hazy Maze Cave",[1] also known as "Cave Dungeon",[2] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario 64, where it plays in the levels Hazy Maze Cave, Cavern of the Metal Cap, and Wet-Dry World, as well as inside the pyramid in Shifting Sand Land, the igloo in Snowman's Land, and Wiggler's cave in Tiny-Huge Island. It is an arrangement of "Underground BGM" from Super Mario Bros., with the main melody played on bass guitar. A haunting vocal track is added to instrumentation whenever the player is in the Hazy Maze or the Underground Lake in Hazy Maze Cave, and in the downtown area in Wet-Dry World.

History[edit]

Super Mario 64[edit]

Super Mario 64 marks the first appearance of "Hazy Maze Cave", and it returns for the same purposes in the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D All-Stars. It is also included in the official Super Mario 64 Original Soundtrack album.

Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

In the Nintendo DS remake of Super Mario 64, Super Mario 64 DS, an arrangement of "Hazy Maze Cave" plays for the same purposes as in the original game, as well as in Goomboss Battle. This arrangement uses slightly different instrumentation, but it is otherwise near identical to the original.
