"A Boss Approaches"[1][2] is a musical theme in Super Mario 3D World, where it plays in the world map upon starting the cutscene when the player first unlocks the levels A Banquet with Hisstocrat and Motley Bossblob's Big Battle. This theme serves as Bowser's leitmotif for the game, reappearing multiple times throughout the game in association with Bowser.

“This theme plays as you take on Bowser, who's hurling bombs from the back of a car! We used heavy metal guitar and bass, but mixed it with big band horns. You'll also hear the synth powering in and the rhythm shifting in quite a prog rock way. There are a lot of elements in the mix.”

Super Mario 3D World marks the first appearance of "A Boss Approaches". It is also included in the official Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

The game also features six additional arrangements of the theme:

  • A frantic arrangement of "A Boss Approaches" plays during the opening cutscene as Bowser kidnaps the green Sprixie Princess. It is titled "Sprixie Kingdom" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • A faster-paced arrangement of "A Boss Approaches" with expanded sections plays during the boss battles against Bowser in Bowser's Highway Showdown and Bowser's Lava Lake Keep. It is titled "Bowser's Highway Showdown" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.
  • The theme that plays during the cutscene after the player clears Bowser's Lava Lake Keep quotes "A Boss Approaches" at the beginning. It is titled "On Bowser's Tail" in the Nintendo Music app and the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

  • A dramatic, orchestral arrangement of the first few notes of "A Boss Approaches" plays during the cutscene before the final boss battle against Giant Bowser. It is titled "Giant Bowser Appears" in the Nintendo Music app.
  • A menacing arrangement of "A Boss Approaches" plays during the final boss battle against Giant Bowser. It is titled "The Final Battle: Giant Bowser!" in the Nintendo Music app.
  • A short, faster-paced arrangement of "A Boss Approaches" plays during the ending cutscene when Bowser tries attacking Mario while Bowser Jr. stops him. It is titled "Epilogue" in the Nintendo Music app.

Mario Kart World[edit]

Mario Kart World features two arrangements of "A Boss Approaches".

A hard bop arrangement of "Bowser's Highway Showdown" can play in Free Roam during the day, on the route from Wario Stadium to Airship Fortress in the Flower Cup, on VS Race routes coming from Airship Fortress, Wario Shipyard, Dry Bones Burnout, and Bowser's Castle during any time of day, and on any VS Race route during nighttime. It is fully titled "Bowser's Highway Showdown (Super Mario 3D World)" in the Nintendo Music app.

A funk arrangement of "World 8" can play exclusively in Free Roam during the day. It is fully titled "World 8 (Super Mario 3D World)" in the Nintendo Music app. The corresponding Nintendo Music image depicts a race on Mario Circuit, a scenario in which the arrangement cannot play.
