Variant of ? Block

Long ? Blocks are horizontally-elongated variants of ? Blocks measuring at least 3 blocks long. When hit, they release three items at once as opposed to one; these items typically are either three coins or a power-up along with two coins. Some Long ? Blocks act as Coin Blocks, releasing multiple sets of three coins when hit in quick succession. When emptied, they turn into elongated Empty Blocks.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Long ? Blocks debut in Super Mario 3D Land.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Long ? Blocks return in New Super Mario Bros. 2. In addition to appearing throughout courses alongside regular ? Blocks, they now act as platforms for Reznors, replacing the bumpable gray platforms used in their boss battles in Super Mario World. Matching the appearance of regular ? Blocks in the game, their question mark symbol now scrolls horizontally along the edge of the block.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Long ? Blocks return once again in Super Mario 3D World and its Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, where their question mark symbol is once again stationary. Some Long ? Blocks act as Hidden Blocks and are invisible to players until struck.

Super Mario Run[edit]

One Long ? Block appears in Super Mario Run. It can be purchased from the Shop as a building in the Kingdom Builder mode. It takes up a 1x2 area. When tapped, it provides the player with either 100 coins, three Rally Tickets, five Rally Tickets, ten Rally Tickets, or thirty Rally Tickets. Afterwards, it enters a cooldown state as an Empty Block for some time.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

While Long ? Blocks do not make an interactive appearance in Super Mario Maker 2, they can be seen in the backgrounds of the ground, underground, forest, and snow themes in the Super Mario 3D World game style.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder / Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park[edit]

Long ? Blocks return in Super Mario Bros. Wonder and its Nintendo Switch 2 port, Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. Some Long ? Blocks are placed in ceilings, which cause the blocks' contents to release downwards. Like regular ? Blocks, they turn magenta during Wonder Effects; in this form, they can release flower coins or power-ups. Their question mark symbol once again scrolls horizontally.

A particularly lengthy Long ? Block appears in the announcement trailer for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. When hit, it turns blue, gains the loading screen's grid-like pattern, and displays the text "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition".[1]
