A route[1] in Mario Kart World is a specific kind of road that connects two separate, often distant, race courses via long stretches of road. A total of 202 routes exist. They are the main roads driven on in the Grand Prix (where the first sections are the path to the destination course, with the final section being the destination course itself) and Knockout Tour and often feature obstacles such as cars, animals, and various enemies like Goombas, Chargin' Chucks, and Treaded Grrrols. If a race begins with a route, racers will uniquely begin to slowly drive forward in a rolling start before and during the starting countdown, accelerating to full speed after "GO!" While the music on these routes is different from the standard race tracks, once the finish line of the next course is approaching, the music will dynamically play a prelude of that course's music before fully changing to it.

Routes span almost the entire map and take various forms, such as highways, mountain ranges, or railroad tracks. Many of the Battle courses are integrated into certain routes. In VS Race, selecting a course opens a menu where the first option is to race on the course in the traditional lap-based way, while the remaining options are to use the course as a route to a nearby track. Rainbow Road has no routes coming from it, and only one route toward it. Unlike previous courses having a set skybox, each course except for Rainbow Road has four different skyboxes for sunrise, daytime, sunset, and nighttime, which may progress when driving through either routes or laps.

Yoshi's drive-throughs appear most frequently on routes. Certain routes pass by a third track; for example, routes between Moo Moo Meadows and DK Pass both ways pass through Dandelion Depths.

Overview[edit]

Of the 202 total routes, 10 of them only go in one direction:

24 routes are used in Grand Prix. As of version 1.7.0, 47 further routes are used in Knockout Tour rallies (with Dandelion Depths to Cheep Cheep Falls used in two rallies, and Mario Bros. Circuit to Crown City and Moo Moo Meadows to Choco Mountain being used in both Grand Prix and Knockout Tour), though many routes in Knockout Tour significantly differ from their VS Race counterparts. The remaining 131 routes are exclusive to VS Race.

Six pairs of routes are used in both directions in different Knockout Tour rallies: Shy Guy Bazaar and Airship Fortress, Cheep Cheep Falls and Peach Stadium, Mario Circuit and Moo Moo Meadows, Dry Bones Burnout and Mario Circuit, Choco Mountain and Moo Moo Meadows, and Mario Bros. Circuit and Choco Mountain. Nine pairs of routes are used in opposite directions in Knockout Tour compared to Grand Prix: Acorn Heights and Mario Circuit, DK Spaceport and Whistlestop Summit, Bowser's Castle and Toad's Factory, Choco Mountain and Moo Moo Meadows, Crown City and Faraway Oasis, Dandelion Depths and Cheep Cheep Falls, Crown City and Peach Stadium, DK Pass and Starview Peak, and Peach Beach and Salty Salty Speedway. This makes for 83 pairs of routes in either direction, as well as 8 of the 10 one-way routes, exclusive to VS Race.

Visualization of how most routes are almost identical to one going in the opposite direction
Most routes are nearly identical to the one going in the opposite direction; for example, the pathway between Mario Bros. Circuit and Crown City only has minor changes if the route is reversed.
Visualization of how a select few routes are completely different from their opposite direction
The routes between Shy Guy Bazaar and Wario Stadium are among a few instances where a route is completely different from its opposite-direction counterpart.

Of the 192 routes that are not one-way, many use a similar pathway to one going in the opposite direction; for example, the route of Mario Bros. Circuit to Crown City uses a similar path as Crown City to Mario Bros. Circuit. However, there are 22 pairs (44 routes) of exceptions where the opposite-direction paths are completely different from one another:

Dividing the 148 two-way routes that are identical to their opposite-direction counterparts comes to 74 repeated pathways. Adding the 10 one-way routes and the 44 routes that are completely different from their opposite-direction counterparts adds up to 128 unique pathways in the game.

The majority of routes show three sections, with the first two sections being the actual route and the third section being the destination course, with the following exceptions:

Possible routes[edit]

Most courses can have significant alterations when taken via certain routes:

  • Crown City and Peach Stadium, which have two layouts in Grand Prix, will have each route take one variant. Peach Stadium's Shell Cup section can be mirrored depending on the route. Without routes, Crown City combines its Grand Prix layouts—with its Shell Cup and third layouts being significantly cut, and the former being driven in reverse—while Peach Stadium exclusively uses its Special Cup layout.
  • A second Shy Guy Bazaar layout featuring a palace and a third Crown City layout featuring a water segment are exclusively used during certain routes, and are completely unavailable without routes.
  • All routes leading to Peach Beach and most routes leading to Mario Circuit only drive on specific sections rather than the full course.
  • Mario Bros. Circuit, Desert Hills, Wario Stadium, DK Pass, Koopa Troopa Beach, and Moo Moo Meadows are driven in reverse during certain routes. The minimap is flipped upside down and ramps are adjusted to account for the reverse direction.
  • After the 1.4.0 update, all routes to Koopa Troopa Beach now do two laps of it rather than one.
  • Certain routes to Crown City's Shell Cup variant, Peach Stadium, Dino Dino Jungle, Dry Bones Burnout, Choco Mountain, and Toad's Factory skip the beginning of the track in favor of unique entrances, and may block off the portion of the track that was skipped.
  • 16 entrances to the following 15 tracks—Mario Bros. Circuit, Whistlestop Summit, Wario Stadium, Airship Fortress, Wario Shipyard, Faraway Oasis, Peach Beach, two entrances into Salty Salty Speedway, Cheep Cheep Falls, Dandelion Depths, Dry Bones Burnout, Moo Moo Meadows, Choco Mountain, Toad's Factory, and Acorn Heights—enter the track near the center of the race course, often from normally inaccessible areas, while still being a full lap.

DK Spaceport, Starview Peak, Sky-High Sundae, Great ? Block Ruins, Boo Cinema, Bowser's Castle, and Rainbow Road are the only courses that do not change depending on the route. All of these except Rainbow Road are at the edge of the map.

Routes used in Grand Prix are in bold. Routes that are labeled in Knockout Tour are in italics, though the Knockout Tour route may significantly differ from its VS Race counterpart. Routes that are more than 3 sections for any reason other than the destination course having multiple sections utilized are marked with an asterisk (*). Routes that are completely different from their counterparts in the opposite direction are marked with a caret (^).

Non-race course locations[edit]

The four Battle courses in the bottom row (Chain Chomp Desert, DK Pass, Big Donut, and Dino Dino Jungle) take place on routes between race courses, despite DK Pass and Dino Dino Jungle being directly named after race courses.

  • Chain Chomp Desert is located north of Shy Guy Bazaar and driven through in routes in both directions from Airship Fortress. Wario Stadium to Shy Guy Bazaar drives through Chain Chomp Desert, though Shy Guy Bazaar to Wario Stadium does not.
  • Big Donut is located directly south of Bowser's Castle. Routes between Bowser's Castle and Toad's Factory, Choco Mountain, or Wario Stadium travel through Big Donut. Many other routes use this battle course as a roundabout but do not allow racers to drive on the entirety of the area, namely both routes between Wario Stadium and Dry Bones Burnout, both routes between Airship Fortress and Toad's Factory, as well as every other route starting from Bowser's Castle (specifically toward Mario Circuit, Dry Bones Burnout, and Airship Fortress), though not their reverse counterparts.
  • DK Pass is located between its racing counterpart and Starview Peak, and is traversed in routes between the two or between the latter and Cheep Cheep Falls. In both cases, significantly less of the battle course is driven through in routes leading to Starview Peak whereas routes leading from Starview Peak feature the battle course in its entirety. Parts of the course are also driven through on both routes between Sky-High Sundae and Dandelion Depths and on the route from Wario Shipyard to Starview Peak. Finally, the Knockout Tour version of the route from Starview Peak to Dandelion Depths, used in the Ice Rally, traverses this course, though its VS counterpart does not.
  • Dino Dino Jungle is driven through via routes between its racing counterpart and Faraway Oasis, Peach Beach (including the Cherry Rally version), or Salty Salty Speedway.

The seven SNES tribute courses that are only able to be fully raced on through certain missions are located on routes near four of the main tracks, and are partially driven through via certain routes.

  • Vanilla Lake (specifically Vanilla Lake 1, though it is not referred to by its number) is located south of Sky-High Sundae, and driven through on both routes between it and Wario Shipyard, as well as from Sky-High Sundae to Cheep Cheep Falls and Salty Salty Speedway, and from Wario Shipyard to Starview Peak.
  • Koopa Beach 1 is located west of Koopa Troopa Beach, and is used for routes between it and either Crown City or DK Spaceport. It is also used for the one-way routes from either Whistlestop Summit or Desert Hills to Koopa Troopa Beach, and the one from DK Spaceport to Peach Stadium.
  • The two Choco Islands are located south of Choco Mountain. Choco Island 1 is southeast of Choco Mountain and driven through in routes between it and Crown City, Peach Stadium, Cheep Cheep Falls or Moo Moo Meadows. Choco Island 2 is southwest of Choco Mountain, driven through in routes between it and Mario Bros. Circuit, Whistlestop Summit, or Shy Guy Bazaar.
  • The three Ghost Valleys are located south of Boo Cinema. Ghost Valley 1 is in the middle and at least partially driven through in every route to and from Boo Cinema. Ghost Valley 2 is on the left and driven through in routes between Boo Cinema and either Dry Bones Burnout or Acorn Heights, while Ghost Valley 3 is on the right and driven through in routes between Boo Cinema and Starview Peak.

Music[edit]

The music that plays on Grand Prix routes is randomly chosen from a selection of tracks per route, generally fitting the theme of either the source or the destination. These tracks do not loop; if the player spends enough time on a route for the music track to end, another track will begin playing, unless the player is up to a certain distance (farther than the normal distance) from the destination course, which will cause its intro music to begin playing. In VS Race, the music that plays is completely random from its own list of possibilities, and will not always match the setting of the route or the music selected for the same route in Grand Prix. In addition to the music tracks used for the Grand Prix routes, other arrangements can also play on VS Race routes; while most of the listed themes can play on any route from any track, some themes are exclusive to or more likely to play on specific tracks or times of the day. In both Grand Prix and VS Race, the route from Peach Stadium to Rainbow Road instead plays "To Rainbow Road" from the beginning.

Peach Stadium → Rainbow Road

Upon approaching the destination course, the route music fades out and an intro variant of the destination course's music begins. The intro variants share the same name as the main course theme in the pause menu (though they are given unique titles in the Nintendo Music app, being titled "[Course] (Intro)"), with the exception of Rainbow Road's, which is titled "To Rainbow Road" (in both the in-game pause menu and the Nintendo Music app). Once the arrival lap starts, the music transitions to the regular course theme. Some of these transitions include drum fills or bridges. Dino Dino Jungle uniquely skips the intro part of the regular course theme and transitions directly into the beginning of the loop. Toad's Factory's transition consists of the longer intro that plays in Mario Kart Wii when players exit the factory.

In Knockout Tour, approaching one course causes the music of the previous course to transition into a coda and end, followed immediately by the approaching course's music beginning with its intro variant. The only courses without a coda in their themes are Great ? Block Ruins and Rainbow Road, as the former only appears at the end of rallies, while the last is not included at all in Knockout Tour. Several courses also use more than one coda, which plays depending on which part of the track it is at when racers approach the next checkpoint: Faraway Oasis has six; Airship Fortress, Wario Shipyard, and Peach Stadium each have five; Mario Bros. Circuit, Boo Cinema, and Mario Circuit each have four; Shy Guy Bazaar, Koopa Troopa Beach, and Bowser's Castle each have three; Whistlestop Summit and Peach Beach each have two; and the rest have only one.
