"Metal Mario,"[1] originally known as "Metallic Mario,"[2][3] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Super Mario 64, where it plays while the player is in Metal Mario form. The theme is an arrangement of "Invincibility BGM" with an added countermelody, much like "Powerful Mario" from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, which was also later arranged for Super Mario 64.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 64[edit]

Super Mario 64 marks the first appearance of "Metal Mario." The theme also appears on the game's soundtrack under the title "Metallic Mario," as well as in Nintendo 64 Original Soundtrack Greatest Hits and Happy! Mario 20th - Super Mario Sound Collection. In Super Mario 3D All-Stars, "Metallic Mario" can also be played within the soundtrack menu.

Super Mario 64 DS[edit]

"Metal Mario" is used for the same purpose in the Nintendo DS remake, Super Mario 64 DS. In addition, there are two arrangements of "Metal Mario" for while the player character is in Mega form and while Yoshi has Fire Power.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, "Metal Mario" plays when the player has Super Star invincibility as Costume Mario with the Mario (Silver) or Mario (Gold) costumes.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a remix of "Metal Mario," titled "Zappy-Zone Wonder" in the Nintendo Music app, plays during the Wonder Effect in High-Voltage Gauntlet as the character takes on a metallic form. The countermelody of "Metal Mario" is also incorporated into the credits theme, "Starry-Staff Wonder", which plays in the High-Voltage Gauntlet section.
