"Desert Theme",[2] also known as "Desert BGM",[3] is a musical theme composed by Shiho Fujii for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where it plays in the desert levels. This theme succeeds "Desert Theme" from New Super Mario Bros., and would make numerous reappearances throughout the New Super Mario Bros. series. This theme incorporates several brief arrangements of its predecessor from New Super Mario Bros.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii marks the first appearance of "Desert Theme". Additional cuíca and shaker is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi.

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, the original version of "Desert Theme" plays in the desert levels.

A woodblock beat is added to the instrumentation whenever Mario or Luigi are in their Raccoon/Fox forms.

A bell synth arpeggiator is added to the instrumentation whenever the Gold Ring is active.

In New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, a remix of "Desert Theme" with minor changes to the oud, santoor, and sitar audio plays in the desert levels. As with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, additional cuíca and shaker percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi.

Vocalizations are added to the instrumentation whenever the player is holding onto a Baby Yoshi. This remix is titled "Desert Theme (Baby Yoshi)" in the Nintendo Music app.

In Super Mario Run, a remix of "Desert Theme" that omits the "Paah" vocals from the New Super Mario Bros. U remix plays in the desert levels. Wind chimes and synthesized scratches are added to the instrumentation whenever a Coin Rush occurs.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, the New Super Mario Bros. U remix of "Desert Theme" plays in New Super Mario Bros. U-style desert-themed levels. As with New Super Mario Bros. Wii, additional cuíca and shaker percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi.

An ambient arrangement of "Desert Theme" plays while editing New Super Mario Bros. U-style desert-themed levels in the Course Maker. This arrangement uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.

A music box arrangement of "Desert Theme" plays in the nighttime version of New Super Mario Bros. U-style desert-themed levels.
