The Drill Spin[citation needed] is a move introduced in New Super Mario Bros. It can only be done while slowly descending after performing certain kinds of jumps that involve spinning, such as the Spin Jump. The Drill Spin, similarly to a Ground Pound, propels the player character downward very quickly while restricting horizontal movement. The speed is especially apparent compared to the slow falling state from the requisite jump. Like a Ground Pound, the Drill Spin can break multiple Brick Blocks in a row and defeat enemies. It often has slight mechanical differences from a Ground Pound, such as starting instantly compared to starting with a flip, and putting less restrictions on movement compared to a Ground Pound.
History[edit]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
In New Super Mario Bros. the Drill Spin can be performed after Mario or Luigi have spin-jumped from fully depressed Spin Block. To use it, the player has to press . The player can move left and right while drill-spinning, though they cannot stop drill-spinning until they touch the ground. Stomping an enemy while in a Drill Spin allows the player to super jump.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Drill Spin can be performed by characters in their Propeller forms, but only while flying or while in the slow falling spinning state that is entered after flying with the form. In the former case, the Drill Spin cancels the flight. The move is tied to holding
instead of just pressing it, and unlike the previous game the Drill Spin can be stopped by releasing
. Exiting a Drill Spin returns the player to the slow falling spinning state. To compare, the player has to press
to cancel a Ground Pound The player can toggle into and out of the Drill Spin state any number of times, like the Ground Pound. The Drill Spin does not repeatedly hit Coin Blocks, whereas a Ground Pound does. Unlike the prior game, the player cannot move horizontally while in a Drill Spin, and enemies stomped with a Drill Spin are defeated without the player getting to jump from them. The Drill Spin clears away nearby clouds, as with other kinds of spinning moves.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
The Drill Spin is a move in New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U, as well as their remake New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. It retains the same mechanics as in the previous game.
Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]
The Drill Spin is a move in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, retaining its mechanics from New Super Mario Bros. U. As Propeller Mario is exclusive to the New Super Mario Bros. U game style, the move can only be used in courses of that style. As there are no clouds in this game, the ability to blow clouds away is not relevant.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
The Quick Drop, also known as the quick descent,[1] is a move in Super Mario Odyssey. It is used when Mario ground-pounds after performing a Spin Jump. Mario cannot move while plummeting, but can return to the Spin Jump state by releasing the ,
,
or
buttons. If he started the Spin Jump using a Hat Trampoline, then canceling Quick Drop will return him to that kind of Spin Jump's slow falling speed. If he started the Spin Jump without using a Hat Trampoline, then cancelling Quick Drop does not make Mario fall any slower.
Unlike prior games, landing during a Quick Drop is a new move called a spinning ground pound,[1]. Mario lands on the ground hard feet first, bending over similarly to Crouching in the process. This kicks up dust, blows away Mini Goombas and sheep, and repeatedly hits Coin Blocks just as a normal Ground Pound does. However, Mario cannot act until the spinning ground pound finishes, just like a normal Ground Pound, though the recovery time for a spinning ground pound is shorter because Mario lands on his feet. After doing a spinning ground pound, Mario also cannot use the Cap Throw in any way unlike how a Ground Pound allows Mario to use a Downward Throw. The player can roll out of a spinning ground pound, as with a Ground Pound. Jumping directly after the spinning ground pound performs a spinning ground pound jump.[1] which looks and acts identically to a Ground Pound Jump.
The Cap Throw can be used while Quick Dropping following a Spin Jump from a Hat Trampoline to cancel out of the Spin Jump state. Doing the same during a Spin Jump done without using a Hat Trampoline causes a Spin Throw instead, but still ends the Spin Jump. Since Cap Throw and Dive use the same button, this mechanic prevents Mario from diving.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
The Drill Spin is a move in Super Mario Maker 2. It retains its behavior from its predecessor, and this game continues to lack clouds. As of version 3.0.0, a Drill Spin can also be performed while using a Propeller Box in the Super Mario 3D World style.
