Targeting Teds[1] are enemies in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. They are red variants of Torpedo Teds that possess orange propeller caps as opposed to red ones, and, unlike their regular counterpart, constantly spin as they move.
Launched from red Torpedo Bases, Targeting Teds home in on the player like their Bullet Bill equivalent, the Missile Bill, chasing them for a short time before flashing a brighter shade of red and detonating soon afterward. Unlike Missile Bills, however, which curve mid-flight to lock on the player, Targeting Teds pause once they fly past the player's position, then adjust themselves to point at the player before attempting to strike them again. Furthermore, while Missile Bills take five seconds to initiate their self-destruction, a Targeting Ted primes itself in twelve seconds, though it still takes three seconds after that to finally explode. They can be blown up prematurely by getting them to hit something else, or by tapping them using Boost Mode with the Wii U GamePad. Targeting Teds adjust their paths and make tight turns when necessary to avoid hitting walls, floors, and ceilings so that they would not immediately get destroyed, though they do not try to evade Brick Blocks, and are one of the few enemies capable of destroying Empty Blocks.
Three red Torpedo Bases deploying these enemies are found in the second, underwater room of The Mighty Cannonship in New Super Mario Bros. U, while another three are found in the similarly water-filled second room of Larry's Trigger-Happy Castle in New Super Luigi U. Additionally, in the boss battles of the The Mighty Cannonship and its equivalent from New Super Luigi U, All Aboard!, Bowser Jr. deploys Targeting Teds with a claw from the bottom of his Junior Clown Car. These must be lured back at him, as they are the only means to defeat him.
