Rope ladders are climbable objects first appearing in New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, rope ladders appear exclusively in World 2-4, where they are anchored to bridges above them by pairs of metallic attachment points. Players are able to climb the rope ladders to get onto and down from the bridges. A strong wind occasionally blows through the level, blowing the rope ladders to the side and making them unusable; if players are on the ladders during this time, they get blown off them. Another rope ladder appears on the map for World 2; finding the secret exit of World 2-6 allows the player to climb the rope ladder up a pillar of ground and access the world's Warp Cannon.

Rope ladders later return in both New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U and their remake, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. They appear in The Mighty Cannonship in New Super Mario Bros. U and Slippery Rope Ladders in New Super Luigi U. Rope ladders retain their design and much of their behavior from New Super Mario Bros. Wii; however, as neither of the levels they appear in feature strong wind, the ladders can be climbed at all times.
