"Bonus Area",[1] also known as "Bonus Music",[2] is a recurring musical theme that appears in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, playing in various bonus areas within the game. Replacing "Bonus Area" from New Super Mario Bros., the theme returns in each following game in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii marks the first appearance of "Bonus Area". Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is riding a Yoshi.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, the original version of "Bonus Area" plays in bonus areas. An arrangement of the theme plays in Rainbow Courses.

In New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the original version of "Bonus Area" plays in bonus areas.

Vocalizations are added to the instrumentation whenever the player is holding onto a Baby Yoshi. This remix is titled "Bonus Area (Baby Yoshi)" in the Nintendo Music app.

A remix of the percussion that plays whenever a player is riding a Yoshi from New Super Mario Bros. Wii goes unused as Yoshis do not appear in bonus areas.[3]

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Bonus Area" plays whenever the "Bonus Music" sound effect is triggered in New Super Mario Bros. U-style courses. The Yoshi remix that was unused in New Super Mario Bros. U plays whenever a player is riding a Yoshi.

Taiko no Tatsujin[edit]

Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Minna de Party Sandaime!, Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Kettei-Ban, Taiko no Tatsujin Wii: Chogouka-Ban, and Taiko no Tatsujin 14 feature a medley of "Ground Theme", "Underground Theme", "Switch On!", "Bonus Area", "Athletic Theme", and "Course Clear" from New Super Mario Bros. Wii as a playable song. It is titled the "New Super Mario Bros. Wii Medley".
