"Flying Battleship Theme"[1] is a musical theme used in the Super Mario Maker series for airship courses in the Super Mario Bros. game style. The theme was introduced in Super Mario Maker, as Super Mario Bros. did not originally feature airship levels.

History[edit]

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

Super Mario Maker marks the first appearance of "Flying Battleship Theme". An ambient arrangement of "Flying Battleship Theme" using eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix plays while editing Super Mario Bros.-style airship-themed courses in the Course Maker. Both the original theme and its arrangement return in the game's Nintendo 3DS port, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS.

An orchestral version of the theme is heard during the ending of the opening cutscene. The complete track, titled "The Skies above Peach's Castle", is featured on the Super Mario Odyssey Original Soundtrack and Nintendo Music. Similar arrangements are featured in the cutscene played after the first Bowser boss fight, titled "Bowser's Bombardment: The Odyssey Goes Down", and the cutscene where Bowser commands the Ruined Dragon to attack the Odyssey, titled "Eye to Eye with the Ruined Dragon".

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, "Flying Battleship Theme" has been tweaked to be more accurate to the sound capabilities of the Nintendo Entertainment System. The Course Maker arrangement returns for the same purpose. A music box arrangement of the theme plays during the nighttime version of airship-themed levels in the Super Mario Bros. style.

In Super Mario Bros. Wonder, the theme is arranged as part of "Flying Battleship Theme". The first portion of the arrangement features a loose adaptation of the theme's bassline. The arrangement leads into an electric guitar version of the theme's main melody. A variation on this arrangement is played while in Elephant Mario form that adds horns to the main melody.

This version of the theme is then further arranged in "Mecha Maker Battle", and quoted in "Starry-Staff Wonder". Each arrangement returns in the Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the game, Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park.
