Udetate and Banzāi are twin bakers introduced in Mario Paint, but first identified as such in Mario Artist: Polygon Studio. In almost all of their appearances, Udetate is seen doing either push-ups or pull-ups while his brother assists him. Udetate is the older of the two twins.
History[edit]
Mario Paint[edit]
Udetate and Banzāi first appear unnamed in a sequence shown when starting Mario Paint. In the sequence, Udetate does sit-ups while his brother holds his feet, and after a few seconds, the sequence concludes with Udetate doing a handstand.
Mario Artist: Polygon Studio[edit]
The two brothers appear in Mario Artist: Polygon Studio, having a chance to appear performing a sequence similar to the one from Mario Paint when the game is started. Both of them have been redesigned slightly to have smaller, oval-shaped heads, and Banzāi's hat color is changed to red. A figure similar to the brothers, albeit without a hat, appears hidden in a hole under the background music option in the Modeler Rocket and Block Dome menus. The figure sometimes pops out of the hole if the game is left inactive for some time.
In the Jikken World, Udetate and Banzāi are mostly unseen figures who leave messages for the player on slices of bread in large pop-up toasters. Udetate initially leaves messages in Hajime Terminal and Porigoneshia. Their identities are not revealed to the player until the player manages to reach Kūchū Teien Porigonā, where a message from Banzāi states that his brother left the bakery in his care while he went on a journey to train his body. Upon reaching the area containing the Power Star block, the player finds a message from Banzāi stating that he too went on a journey to train his body, leaving the player with two hints on how to find both brothers.
Banzāi can be found and collected as a block in Kōkōdo Paradiso, accessed by reaching 4350 meters of altitude. There, a message from him reveals that, after training for a long time, he turned into a block. Similarly, Udetate can be found in Henkyō Inferno, accessed by travelling a long horizontal distance away from the main playing area. There, another message also reveals that Udetate had turned into a block after a long period of training. Both areas are located right next to each other, being seen through invisible walls. The collectible blocks of both brothers, which are named after the actions they perform, are the only instances in any game where the brothers are named directly.
The game also reveals that Udetate has been managing a bakery for 50 years, and is famous for printing messages on slices of bread.
WarioWare series[edit]
The two twins are recurring minor characters in the WarioWare series, although they are not usually able to be differentiated from each other. In WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, Udetate is the object hiding inside of the log on the third difficulty level of I Came, I Saw, where he is shown to be designed after his appearance in Mario Artist: Polygon Studio. In WarioWare: Twisted!, Udetate appears in the third level of Boomerang! as the object to throw and catch with the gyro controls. One of the twins also appears in Level 3 of Red Delicious? as the object inside the apple. In WarioWare: D.I.Y., Udetate can appear inside the sawn log in I Saw It!, doing sit ups before performing a handstand. In WarioWare: Move It!, the twins can sometimes appear on the title screen.
