Jikken World is a game mode in Mario Artist: Polygon Studio, accessed through the Block Dome. It consists of a large open world made up of several areas, which can be explored with a custom vehicle created by the player. Spread around the areas are various blocks which can be used to further customize the player's vehicle, allowing it to go faster and reach newer areas. Found in these areas are also shokupan, loaves of breads carrying messages that provide hints and advice to the player.

In Jikken World, the player can control vehicles assembled in the Block Dome mode. Each vehicle can have up to four different movement modes: Walking, driving, swimming or flying. Swapping between those causes the vehicle to swap between relevant blocks; for example, a vehicle with a water propeller and car wheels attached has its propeller hidden while in the driving mode and, inversely, its wheels hidden while in the swimming mode. A fifth universal mode allows the vehicle to have every block revealed. The world has a day-night cycle of around 15 minutes, with 8 minutes of day and 7 minutes of night. Time passes even when inside sub-areas.

The terrain in Jikken World is made up of various materials, each with different properties. The types of material with unique properties include sand, snow and thorny terrain, all of which cause the player to lose traction when driven over without the required blocks. Ice and iron terrain also cause the player to lose traction, but cannot be overcome by any block. Other terrain elements that can hinder movement include water and tall inclines. Certain objects fall when touched by the vehicle, revealing secret passages or blocking access to other areas. A special material found underwater in the lake area is invisible at daytime, appearing only when it is night.

Dōryoku Blocks[edit]

Each Dōryoku Block is characterized by a power rating, as well as by their ability to perform in specific types of terrain. Some blocks only work properly when touching the ground and rotated correctly. The following is a list of traits each Dōryoku Block may have:

  • Power: Rated from zero to five stars. Determines how fast the vehicle can with that block.
  • Sand driving: If the block can drive on sand.
  • Snow driving: If the block can drive on snow.
  • Thorns driving: If the block can drive on terrain made of pink thorns.
  • Swimming: If the block can propel the vehicle when underwater.
  • Flying: If the block can propel the vehicle through the air.
  • Clinging: If the block can walk on and stick to vertical surfaces
  • Floating on water: If the block can float on water
  • Glide: If the block can glide unpowered through the air.
  • Floating on air: If the block can float upwards on air.
  • Grip: If the block can enable better handling when sliding on surfaces such as ice.

Besides those stats, blocks can have other properties. Leg blocks can jump higher, while blocks such as the metal belt are better suited for going up steep inclines. Blocks capable of gliding also have a maximum altitude they can reach. Being attacked by a tube creature, falling from a great height or hitting a wall when going too fast causes the player's vehicle to lose a block, which can only be regained by exiting Jikken World and re-entering it.
