"Super Star",[2] also known as "Invincible Theme",[1] is a musical theme in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where it usually plays whenever a character is invincible after collecting a Super Star. It is an arrangement of "Invincibility BGM" from Super Mario Bros. that includes descending F major seventh and E minor seventh arpeggios throughout the theme, quoting the introduction for the Super Mario 64 arrangement of "Powerful Mario".

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii marks the first appearance of "Super Star".

On top of the original, an arrangement of the theme is present, where it gains bongos and other percussion while one or more of the players is riding a Yoshi. If a Super Star is used from the inventory, a version with much quieter bass and no drums will play on top of the world map music.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

"Super Star" returns in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the same purpose.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. U, every version of "Super Star" present in New Super Mario Bros. Wii returns for the same purposes.

Additionally, vocalizations are added to the instrumentation when a player is holding a Baby Yoshi. This remix is titled "Super Star (Baby Yoshi)" in the Nintendo Music app.

A chiptune-inspired arrangement of the theme is used when the Boost Mode player is under the effects of the Boost Star.

All versions of the theme in New Super Mario Bros. U return in New Super Luigi U, while New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe excludes the Boost Mode arrangement, as that port lacks the mode.

In New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the theme was given a slight revision which added more echo and made the bassline more prominent.[3]

Super Mario Run[edit]

"Super Star" reappears in Super Mario Run for the same purpose.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

In Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam, during the fourth papercraft battle, the world map remix of "Super Star" can be heard when Papercraft Yoshi obtains the Star power-up. This does not return in the Battle Ring version.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Super Star" plays when the player collects a Super Star in the New Super Mario Bros. U style.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]

In Mario Golf: Super Rush, a remix of "Super Star" featuring both the Yoshi drums and Baby Yoshi vocals plays when Mario uses the Super Star in his Special Shot.

Hello, Mario! / Hello, Yoshi![edit]

In Hello, Mario! and Hello, Yoshi!, a new arrangement of "Super Star" plays whenever the player gives Mario or a Yoshi a Super Star. Additionally, a remix of the arrangement that adds vocals plays when the player launches Mario or Yoshi to pop bubbles.

Mario Tennis Fever[edit]

In Mario Tennis Fever, "Super Star (Baby Yoshi)" from New Super Mario Bros. U plays when a character uses the Star Racket.

Other appearances[edit]

Lego City Undercover[edit]

In the Wii U and Nintendo Switch versions of Lego City Undercover, a brief clip of "Super Star" can be heard whenever the player builds a Super Star.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons[edit]

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, when the player activates the Super Star furniture item, the original version of "Super Star" plays for a small duration of time, complete with the chime that plays when the invincibility is about to run out.

Shibuya Crossing 2019 New Year's animation[edit]

The original version of "Super Star" appears in an animation projected at Shibuya Crossing, Tokyo, during the 2019 New Year's celebration, when Mario collects a golden Shiba Inu coin and transforms himself into his Shiba Inu form to defeat Bowser.[4]
