Heavy Scuttlebugs are mini-bosses in Mario Tennis Fever. They are large variants of Scuttlebugs that are furrier and have red eyes and six limbs instead four, four of them acting as their hind legs with suction cup-like feet (like the Scuttlebug's design in Super Mario 64 DS) and their front limbs acting as their arms with boxing glove-like hands (like the Scuttlebug's modern design since New Super Mario Bros. 2). They are infused with power from a mysterious tree. They are members of the monsters and resemble their leader, King Scuttlebug. They first appear in the intro cutscene, where two of them appear alongside their leader, obscured by a dark fog, and performing a powerful attack that transforms the protagonists into their baby forms. They are later encountered as boss fights in the Valley of the Monsters.
The first one appears after the first two battles. This Heavy Scuttlebug appears under the name of ???. It has three Fuzzies floating around it and is imbued with a dark fog. It begins by launching the Fuzzies at the player, who must return them with the racket to the red panels in the arena. After all the panels are deactivated, the Heavy Scuttlebug will perform a powerful attack, launching all the dark fog surrounding it toward the player. This attack must be returned to damage the Heavy Scuttlebug. After taking damage, the Heavy Scuttlebug will surround itself with fog again and activate more red panels. After the Heavy Scuttlebug is damaged once more, it will activate all the red panels in the arena and awaken two Dry Bones present in the arena to help it in combat. These Dry Bones will return the Fuzzies launched at them with their own rackets. To temporarily stun them, the player must attack them from the sides. After the Heavy Scuttlebug is damaged for the third time, it explodes, allowing passage and reverting Luigi to his normal form.
The second Heavy Scuttlebug appears two fights away from the previous one. It emerges from the ruins without any dark fog surrounding it. It attacks the player by using its spiderweb to drag the Fuzzies around it and then launch them toward the player; these Fuzzies must be returned to it to damage it. Also, occasionally, Brolders emerge from the ruins between the Heavy Scuttlebug and roll forward. After the Heavy Scuttlebug loses a third of its health bar, it will jump onto the ruins to the left. Here, the Heavy Scuttlebug charges a dark fog to launch at the player; this fog must be returned to damage it, similar to the previous Heavy Scuttlebug. The Heavy Scuttlebug will occasionally jump left or right, changing position. In the arena, more Brolders will appear rolling, and now Scuttlebugs will appear from the ceiling. After losing two-thirds of its health, the Heavy Scuttlebug will jump to the ruins on the right, where it will now perform a faster combination of attacks from the first and second phases. It can also now jump to the platforms in front of the ruins. After losing all its health, the Heavy Scuttlebug will explode, allowing access to the final boss and reverting Peach to her normal form.
