A category for descriptively large variants of other enemies, bosses, powered-up forms, non-playable characters, and items in the Super Mario franchise. This recurring creative and design trend was introduced in Super Mario Bros. 3. In Japanese, the names of these subjects are prefaced with「でか」(Deka, typically localized as "Big"),「巨大」(Kyodai, localized as "Mega"),「大」(Dai), and「ビッグ」(Biggu, "Big"). The prefix「おおきな」(ōkina) sees infrequent usage, but this term is typically descriptive of an atypically larger individual (i.e., a large Cheep Cheep, or large panda) rather than a component of a discrete moniker (i.e., a Big Cheep Cheep or Giant Panda). For more elaboration and examples, see Big Koopa Troopa § Etymology, Big Cheep Cheep § Etymology, and Big Boo § Etymology. How these names have been localized into non-Japanese languages has been varied and less consistent, particularly prior to 2010.
