"Choco Mountain",[1] also known as "Choco Mountain/Battle Arenas"[2] or simply "Mountain",[3] is a musical theme composed by Kenta Nagata for Mario Kart 64, where it plays in the race course of the same name, as well as in the battle courses Block Fort and Double Deck.

History[edit]

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart 64[edit]

Mario Kart 64 marks the first appearance of "Choco Mountain". It is also included in the official soundtrack albums Mario Kart 64 Race Tracks and Mario Kart 64 Original Soundtrack.

Mario Kart DS[edit]

In Mario Kart DS, an arrangement of "Choco Mountain" arranged by Shinobu Nagata plays in N64 Choco Mountain.

This arrangement does not play in Block Fort like the original theme did in Mario Kart 64, instead playing "Battle Course" just like all of the other battle courses.

This arrangement is country-inspired and feature a harmonica, fiddle, banjo, and electric guitar. It is likewise titled "N64 Choco Mountain" in the Nintendo Music app. A looping drum set beat is added to the instrumentation whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place.

In Mario Kart World, a heavy metal arrangement of "Choco Mountain" plays when racing in the course of the same name. When approaching Choco Mountain from a route or during a rally before reaching the course's finish line, a simple prelude arrangement of "Choco Mountain" plays, featuring a guitar riff that resembles the beginning of the theme that plays during the opening cutscene of Mario Kart Wii. In Knockout Tour, leaving Choco Mountain causes the theme to transition into a coda.

An arrangement of the prelude version of "Choco Mountain" plays during the intro cutscene for the Lightning Cup.
