"Cosmic Comet"[1] is a theme composed by Mahito Yokota for Super Mario Galaxy, where it plays in Cosmic Comet and Fast-Foe Comet missions. It is a fast-paced techno arrangement of "Underground BGM" and "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros.

The theme takes elements from previous arrangements of "Underground BGM", including "Shadow Mario" from Super Mario Sunshine and "Space Athletic" from Super Mario Galaxy itself.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy marks the first appearance of "Cosmic Comet". It returns in the game's Nintendo Switch ports, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is also included in the official Super Mario Galaxy Original Soundtrack album.

In Super Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2, an arrangement of "Cosmic Comet" that is raised in pitch by a semitone and has a more elaborate beginning plays during the Clone Comet mission "The Shadow Lining" and the Double Time Comet mission "Turning Turning Double Time". Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation when riding Yoshi.
