"Underground BGM"[1] is a musical theme composed by Koji Kondo for Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and Super Mario Bros. 2, where it plays in the underground sections of levels.

Super Mario series[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic / Super Mario Bros. 2 / Super Mario All-Stars / Super Mario Advance[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic marks the first appearance of "Underground BGM". When that game was later redeveloped as Super Mario Bros. 2, the theme was given slightly more enhanced instrumentation and additional PCM percussion samples reminiscent of bongos, which is the version subsequent appearances of the theme in the Super Mario franchise are based on. The Super Mario Bros. 2 version is also included in the official albums FAMICOM 20TH ANNIVERSARY GAMEMUSIC DVD, Game Sound Museum: Mario Bros. / Super Mario USA, Famicom Sound History Series: Mario the Music, and The 30th Anniversary Super Mario Bros. Music.

In the Super Nintendo Entertainment System remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 in Super Mario All-Stars, an arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays for the same purpose as in the original game. This arrangement has the third and fourth notes from the second half's lengths swapped, similar to Famicom Music Volume 2, and has a closer tempo to Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic.

In the Game Boy Advance remake of Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Advance, a slightly higher-pitched arrangement of "Underground BGM" plays for the same purpose as in the original game. This arrangement plays in a similar tempo to the original theme.

In Super Mario Run, a medley arrangement of "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros., "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. 3, "Easton Kingdom BGM" from Super Mario Land, "Ground BGM" from Super Mario World, and "Underground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. 2 plays in Remix 10.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

In Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Underground BGM" plays whenever the player is in their SMB2 form during levels in the underground, ghost house, or castle theme.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, a free jazz arrangement of "Underground BGM" can play in Free Roam during the day, on the route from Dandelion Depths to Boo Cinema in the Leaf Cup, and on any VS Race route during nighttime. It is fully titled "Underground BGM (Super Mario Bros. 2)" in the Nintendo Music app. This arrangement also quotes "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. 2 halfway through the track.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie[edit]

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, an arrangement of "Underground BGM" arranged by Brian Tyler plays when Princess Peach and Toad chase Ukiki through the Minus World. Though this theme is not featured in the film's official soundtrack, it is featured on the Gateway Galaxy promotional website when scrolling down to the casino section. It is titled "Den of Debauchery" when accessed through the website's code.[2]

The Famicom Music Vol.2 album features a medley arrangement of "Ground BGM", "Underground BGM", "Final Boss BGM", and "Ending" from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic arranged by Yoshihiro Kunimoto. It is titled 「ドキドキパニック (アレンジ・バージョン)」 (Doki Doki Panikku (Arenji Bājon), "Doki Doki Panic (Arrange Version)").
