- “I received a lot of compliments about this composition from my colleagues and acquaintances. Curious as to why, I asked Sugawara, the sound engineer, to give me his analysis. He said it was because out of the entire soundtrack, this piece sounded strangely lyrical. Considering where this track plays, I don't think it was strange at all! During development, the area was first called the Forest of Spirits and later the Lost Forest before the name was eventually finalized as Forest Maze. I wanted to express the feeling of being inside an eerie forest shrouded in mystery, hence the "strangely lyrical" direction. Well, I like this track a lot, so I'm happy other people do, too.”
- —Yoko Shimomura, Liner notes in Super Mario RPG Original Sound Version
"Beware of Forest Mushrooms"[1] is a musical theme composed by Yoko Shimomura for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, where it plays in the Forest Maze.

- “I feel this is one track from Super Mario RPG that became a breakout hit. Composing it came very easy to me, from the melody to the structure; I wrote it in no time. I mentioned this in the booklet for the original soundtrack's release, but I remember being told that this track sounded lyrical, in a way. I'm very happy to hear that's a well-loved track.”
- —Yoko Shimomura, Liner notes in Super Mario RPG Original Sound Box
In the Nintendo Switch remake of Super Mario RPG, the original version of "Beware of Forest Mushrooms" plays for the same purpose as in the original game if the music is set to the "Classic" setting. If the music is set to the "Modern" setting, a new orchestral arrangement of the theme will play instead. This version of the theme was once again arranged by Yoko Shimomura. It is also included in the official albums Super Mario RPG Original Soundtrack, Super Mario RPG Original Sound Box, and Super Mario RPG Original Sound Vinyl Box.

Notes[edit]
- A few notes resembling "Beware of Forest Mushrooms" can be heard in the Toad Town, Peach's Castle, and Dimble Wood themes in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story. Given that Yoko Shimomura is responsible for the music in both Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and the Mario & Luigi series, there is a possibility that this is intentional.
