Baby Fat, Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Baby Fat[1] is a pudgy Baby Yoshi who appears as an inhabitant of Yo'ster Isle in Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its remake. Since Baby Fat is a baby, his voice is higher than the older Yoshis'. His appearance is similar to that of the Fat Chocobo from Square's own Final Fantasy franchise.

Baby Fat first appears as a Yoshi Egg in a nest in between two Yoshi Houses. After Mario defeats Bundt in Marrymore, Baby Fat hatches as a small Baby Yoshi. If the player interacts with Baby Fat, Yoshi will ask Mario if he wants to give some cookies to him. If the player chooses "Yes," he will be asked how many cookies he wishes to give him. A Yoshi on the island hints that if Mario feeds the Baby Yoshi enough cookies, he will become too fat and have to leave the nest. This happens after Mario has given him 30 Yoshi Cookies. Baby Fat's voice becomes deeper but not as deep as Boshi's voice. After Baby Fat leaves the nest, Mario can continue to feed him cookies for a chance at an item. If fed an insufficient number of cookies, Baby Fat will complain that Mario has not fed him very many. If fed 10–20 cookies, Baby Fat will lay an egg containing an item inside. The items that can hatch from the eggs laid by the Baby Yoshi are Bracers, Energizers, Yoshi-Ades, Yoshi Candies, Frog Coins, and Red Essences. Baby Fat will also give out Frog Coins as a reward any time the number of cookies Mario has fed him reaches a multiple of 50. Any number of cookies fed to him above 20 will not give a better chance at an item or guarantee drops of items other than those listed previously except if Mario feeds Baby Fat 50 cookies at once, in which case Baby Fat will lay an egg that will hatch as a Frog Coin.

  • "I'm dying for some Cookies."
  • "OH! I AM STUFFED! I won't need to eat for weeks!"
  • "Phew! Now that's what I call generous!"
  • "I gained weight after eating 21 cookies! If Mario always gives me 20 cookies, I'll give him something nice." (translated from Japanese)[2]

  • "Baby Fat" originated as a section header in the Player's Guide for the game in a section referring to the Yoshi;[5] here, it is most likely intended as a pun on the phrase "baby fat" rather than intended to be treated as a name. Most of the other section headers are not their subjects' names.

He’ll keep chomping on all the cookies you give him, and when he’s full, you’ll receive some very interesting new items... Chow down, fat boy!" – (August 1996).
