The Super Mario RPG Original Sound Box is the official soundtrack compilation for Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars's Nintendo Switch remake. The first two discs feature the Super Mario RPG Original Soundtrack, containing the new arrangements for the remake by original composer Yoko Shimomura, as well as Tomomichi Takeoka and Natsumi Kameoka. The latter two discs feature a remaster of the previously released Super Mario RPG Original Sound Version, containing Shimomura's original Super Nintendo Entertainment System compositions. It went on sale in Japan on April 9, 2025, but it can also be bought on Square Enix Music's North American and European shops.[2]
The package also includes a supplementary booklet that contains Shimomura's comments on the development of each song in the game.
Track listing[edit]
While the track listing for both versions of the soundtrack remains the same as in the original Super Mario RPG Original Sound Version, the lengths of the remastered tracks have been adjusted.
Disc 1[edit]
Total length (remastered tracks): 51:28
# | Japanese name | Localized name | Liner notes | Length (remastered tracks) |
---|---|---|---|---|
01 | 楽しい冒険 愉快な冒険 Fun Adventure, Cheerful Adventure |
Fun Adventure, Cheerful Adventure | I wanted to write a song to get you excited for whatever fantastic adventure awaits you. The beat starts out bouncy, to go with Mario's jumps, but ends on a rather foreboding note... | 03:38 |
02 | Let's Try | Let's Try! | I knew from the get-go what I wanted the pre-chorus for this track to be. It really laid out how I was going to include music from the original Mario series into the soundtrack. | 01:10 |
03 | お花畑にて In the Flower Garden |
In the Flower Garden | This track begins with an arrangement of "Grass Land", the World 1 theme from Super Mario Brothers 3. I remember when I first played through the scene of Peach picking flowers, I thought the music matched perfectly! (Not to toot my own horn. LOL) | 00:31 |
04 | クッパ城(其ノ壱) Koopa Castle (First Time) |
Bowser's Keep (First Visit) | My aim for this song was to invoke that typical "evil villain's lair" atmosphere you encounter in RPGs, while also creating something that still felt musically at home in the Mario universe. | 00:40 |
05 | 対 クッパ戦 VS Koopa Battle |
Battling Bowser | While arranging the soundtracks for the Switch version, I listened to the original as I worked. There are some synth instruments that are hard to replicate on modern devices, and this song featured one of those. But I was careful to select instruments that still resembled the original! | 01:07 |
06 | 剣は降り星は散る The Sword Descends and the Stars Scatter |
The Sword That Scattered the Stars | I tried my best to not make the remastered soundtrack too grand, since I thought it would clash with the game's overall tone. However, I was expressly requested to make this one song sound as magnificent as possible. Ask and ye shall receive! (LOL) | 00:40 |
07 | Super Pipe House | Super Mario House | I knew I wanted to feature that famous Mario tune as the main melody for this track, since it plays in his house. Then I wondered if there was another melody I could include here that had that same Mario flair. Immediately, "World 1 Map (Grass Land)," the Grass Land theme from Super Mario Brothers 3, was what came to mind. | 01:37 |
08 | どこに行きますか? Where Do I Go? |
Where To? | My goal was to make this piece feel pensive, like you're pondering where to head next. The original track was rather short, so I tried to make the Switch version a smidge longer, but I got a bit heavy-handed. Embellishing pre-existing musical phrases is so much fun, I can't help it! | 00:40 |
09 | 道中は危険がいっぱい Danger Abounds on the Journey |
Danger Abounds on the Journey | While writing the music for the original game, a colleague told me that when Nobuo Uematsu listened to this track and saw the data for it, he was impressed. Hearing that made me felt so accomplished! Getting it to sound just like I envisioned was a challenge due to sound channel limitations, but it was absolutely worth it. | 01:39 |
10 | 対 モンスター戦 VS Monster Battle |
Battling Monsters | This is the music that plays during standard battles, so I wanted to make it bright and cheerful to keep you entertained as you played. The Switch version is a bit longer than the original, due to the key change in the middle. I think it adds to the excitement! | 01:17 |
11 | 勝利!! Victory!! |
Victory! | Players have likely noticed that, in the original Super Mario RPG, the orchestra hit (the short BAM! noise) plays right as Mario holds up a peace sign. I was actually the one who suggested that! They were off synch during development, so I said why not make the motion and the audio line up! The orchestra hit lines up with Mario taking off his hat in the remake, too! I'm so glad ♡ | 00:29 |
12 | Hello, Happy Kingdom | Hello, Happy Kingdom | If memory serves, this is the second piece I composed for the original game. It really set the tone for the rest of the music in the work. This track features a metronome sound, which we recorded in studio for the Switch version! Went the whole nine yards for this track. (LOL) | 02:34 |
13 | 説明しますっ! Let Me Explain! |
Let Me Explain! | The ding of the metronome is front and center in this track. As I mentioned in my comment for "Hello, Happy Kingdom," we used a real metronome when recording the soundtrack. The one we used belongs to Yokota, a sound director at Nintendo. As we went through all our metronome options, we chose his in the end! | 00:15 |
14 | 新しい仲間 A New Ally |
A New Friend | I love how the characters strike a pose during the BAM! at the end ♡ | 00:09 |
15 | まだまだ道中は危険がいっぱい Danger Still Abounds on the Journey |
Danger Aplenty on the Journey | Once I got the inspiration for this one, composing it went smoothly. I aimed for something spirited, like you'd hear at a school sports meet, but leaning more toward a fun, traversing-the-field feel. | 01:50 |
16 | ごきげんスター Spirited Star |
Irrepressible Star | This is the tune to play when you want to feel absolutely invincible! | 00:20 |
17 | 対 ちょっぴり強いモンスター戦 VS Strongish Monster Battle |
Battling Strongish Monsters | For this boss theme, I wanted to conjure up the image of a powerfully wicked foe who's endearing at the same time. Battle themes for this soundtrack feature the 5+ Chain versions of the tracks for the second loop, which are flashier than the originals. | 01:22 |
18 | 武器たちがやってきた! The Weapons Showed Up! |
The Weapons Show Up | I recall having a blast composing this SNES track back in the day. At around the 38 second mark in the Switch version, the melody changes keys for a moment and then immediately switches back. I always heard this key change in my head when I listened to the tune, so I added it to the remastered track. | 01:29 |
19 | 対 武器ボス戦 VS Weapon Boss Battle |
Battling a Weapon Boss | There's a hollow, clacky noise in the SNES version of this track… Can you guess what it is? It's the percussion loop in "Welcome to Yo'ster Isle!" with its pitch modulated. Back then, we had to come up with ways to reuse samples since data space was so limited. I felt it'd be a waste to only use something once, which led to me creating this track. | 02:03 |
20 | スターピース入手 Got a Star Piece |
Got a Star Piece! | I wanted the Switch rendition of this to have a magnificently orchestrated fanfare play after the jingly intro. | 00:35 |
21 | ダンジョンはモンスターがいっぱい Monsters Abound in the Dungeon |
Monsters Abound in the Dungeon | I was inspired to produce a tune that was eerie, but not too scary…but ultimately kinda spooky all the same. | 01:16 |
22 | ワイン川を行こう Let's Go Down the Wine River |
Let's Take the Midas River | Now this is a track that will get you on your feet! It's not often that I get a chance to write music like this, and I had tons of fun while composing it. The remade track has all the merriment I wanted to put in the original and more. | 01:18 |
23 | おじいちゃんと愉快なオタマ達 Grandpa and the Cheerful Tadpoles |
Grandpa and the Upbeat Tadpoles | I love Latin music. The moment you add some Latin percussion to a song, it infuses it with an energy like no other. I also want to mention that one loop of this track only lasts 17 seconds. It might actually be the shortest overworld theme I've ever written… | 00:49 |
24 | ショック! Shock! |
Shock! | Dun-duuun! Not much else to say about this one. (LOL) | 00:09 |
25 | かなしいうた Sad Song |
Elegy | This track used to sound like a knock-off version of a Chopin-esque waltz. It was meant to be a piano solo at first, but Kameoka, the arranger for this track, added strings and it sounded amazing! Now it ends on a high note! | 01:02 |
26 | ねぇねぇジーノごっこしようよ Hey Hey, Let's Play Make-Believe with Geno |
Play "Save the World" with Me! | The melody after the intro bars is an arrangement of the overworld theme (Yo'ster Isle) from Super Mario World. During Super Mario RPG's initial development, the arrangement tracks were mostly whatever music from the Mario series jumped out at me. I remembered this bit of music well. Whether it's playing with dolls or playing video games, it's all fun and games one way or another. | 01:23 |
27 | ジーノの目覚め Geno's Awakening |
Geno's Awakening | This particular track has multiple tempo changes in order to synch with the visuals of the cutscene. The rearranged version was recorded with live instruments, so the tempo changes probably felt a tad unusual to the musicians... The original composition looped but I found an opportunity to give the Switch version a nice, clean ending. | 01:29 |
28 | 森のキノコにご用心 Beware of Forest Mushrooms |
Beware of Forest Mushrooms | I feel this is one track from Super Mario RPG that became a breakout hit. Composing it came very easy to me, from the melody to the structure; I wrote it in no time. I mentioned this in the booklet for the original soundtrack's release, but I remember being told that this track sounded lyrical, in a way. I'm very happy to hear that's a well-loved track. | 02:12 |
29 | Rose Town | Rose Town | My vision for this tune was a punchy, big band sound. However, the SNES's limited voice channels made it hard to emulate a typical brass rhythm. To work around this, I wrote some commands to change the timbre of the instrument in the channel featuring the main melody. Playing around within those limitations is half the fun sometimes! | 01:11 |
30 | 土管からコンニチハ Hello from the Pipes |
Greetings from the Pipes | Here we have the famous Mario underground theme! This arrangement came to me before I even started considering the rest of the tracklist. I remember begging the developers to have it play in a subterranean level somewhere. | 01:10 |
31 | Welcome! Yo'ster Island!! | Welcome to Yo'ster Isle! | One of the music phrases in this track was actually inspired by by a sound effect from an NES game I encountered in the past. For some reason, it never left my mind after I heard it. I won't say which game it was, but I will say that the sound is a fun memory I share with my family. | 01:45 |
32 | かけっこしようよ Let's Race |
Let's Race | Now this track sound like something you'd definitely hear at a school sports meet! Someone mentioned that an elementary school somewhere actually played it at theirs. What an honor! | 01:01 |
33 | 働きモグラは良いモグラ A Working Mole Is a Good Mole |
A Working Mole Is a Happy Mole | When the request for a mining town theme came in, it took some time to come up with an idea. I imagined cute moles hard at work swinging oversized pickaxes as I composed. There is no such scene in the game, of course. (LOL) But you need to have a vivid imagination in this line of work! | 01:41 |
34 | Docaty Mountain Railroad | Moleville Mountain Rail | What better genre for the minecart minigame than country music? I mentioned this in the original soundtrack booklet, but I wrote this piece after having dinner at a favorite okonomiyaki restaurant close to my workplace. They were playing old country music hits and inspiration struck me, so I rushed back to my office to compose this tune. I looked up the restaurant to see if they were still in business, and they had shut down... | 02:33 |
35 | ここはブッキータワーでございます This Is Bucky Tower |
This Is Booster Tower | For the SNES version of this track, I was asked to make it sound like a Paul Mauriat piece—give it a jazzy, easy-listening sort of feel. I don't think it came out half bad, if I do say so myself! The contrast between this piece and Booster's theme that plays after is brilliant, in my opinion. The person who requested this track had great musical taste. | 01:43 |
36 | そしてわたしの名はブッキー And That Means My Name Is Bucky |
And That Makes Me Booster! | I used a low frequency oscillator (LFO) to alter the timbre of the main melody of the SNES version of the track. LFOs are often used to modulate pitch and achieve a vibrato effect. I decided to modulate the volume instead at a high frequency to produce the sonic result heard in the melody. The saxophonists in the Switch version of the piece used a technique known as growling to emulate the timbre of the original. | 02:12 |
37 | Long Long Ago… | Long, Long Ago... | I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that this is one melody that changed my life. I was very particular about making the SNES version of this track sound as close to the original Super Mario Brothers tune as I could. | 01:39 |
38 | ちょっとドキドキ A Little Heart-Pounding |
A Little Anxious | This is an arrangement of the picture-matching minigame theme from Super Mario Brothers 3. I notice I reference a lot of tracks from that game... | 00:46 |
39 | 坂道 The Slope |
The Hill | "How many key changes does one song need!?" is what kept running through my mind while composing this for the SNES. Luckily (and it really was pure luck), the Switch version finishes neatly without looping, just like "Geno's Awakening." Isn't it nice when everything just comes together? The highlight of the remastered track has to be the trombone! | 02:04 |
Disc 2[edit]
Total length (remastered tracks): 52:36
# | Japanese name | Localized name | Liner notes | Length (remastered tracks) |
---|---|---|---|---|
01 | メリー・マリーの鐘が鳴る The Merry Marry Bell Rings |
The Bell Rings Out at Marrymore | They say that Japanese people struggle with music written in 6/8 time. I remember my teachers at school telling me the same. But it's one of my favorite time signatures! In fact, ever since I wrote this piece, I wished I could write another one like it... So that's exactly what I did. Has anybody figured out which piece that is? | 02:34 |
02 | 祝いのメロディ Melody of Celebration |
Melody of Celebration | I imagined the title of this piece being sung as I composed the melody. | 00:13 |
03 | 星の光の花咲く丘で At the Hill Where Starlight Flowers Bloom |
Where Flowers Bloom under Starlight | Star Hill in the Switch remake looks so beautifully ethereal! I wanted this track to sound dreamy, reminiscent of the twinkling of stars against the night sky. Not to toot my own horn (again), but I think the title I came up with for this track is quite pretty. | 01:22 |
04 | 沈没船 The Sunken Ship |
The Sunken Ship | There was the sound of a creaking ship in the SNES version of this track. Originally, we had to stop whatever instrument was active, then play the sound effect because music and SFX "shared" audio channels on the SNES. However, since the Switch version has a separate track for sound effects, the recording features just the music. | 03:05 |
05 | お買い物ならリップルタウンへどうぞ Going Shopping at Ripple Town |
Shopping at Seaside Town | I wanted the music for this area to be a cheerful tune that made you want to skip. I like to pretend this kind of music plays in the background as I do my own shopping. (How did this become about me?) | 01:35 |
06 | 僕らの楽園〜モンスタウン〜 Our Paradise ~Monstown~ |
Monstro Town, Our Paradise | This track is longer than most overworld pieces because once I started composing, I just kept adding on to it. I didn't realize just how long it was until I listened back. (LOL) That being said, it's not a complex piece; at its core, it's just four short, differing phrases repeated over and over. | 03:40 |
07 | 対 クリスタラー戦 VS Crystaler Battle |
Battling Culex | I got a request to reference some fight music from FINAL FANTASY for this track, leaving the choice of which piece to me. Right away, I hummed the melody to this piece together with "Battle Theme 1" from FINAL FANTASY II. That explains why they sound so similar... Hope I made the right choice for this battle! | 02:29 |
08 | クリスタラー戦での勝利 Victory at Crystaler Battle |
Victory over Culex | The one and only victory fanfare from the FINAL FANTASY series. For the remastered track, I went with a classic orchestral arrangement and spruced it up. | 00:52 |
09 | クリスタラーの会話 Conversation with Crystaler |
Conversation with Culex | The one and only prelude theme from the FINAL FANTASY series. I wanted the Switch version to sound more full-bodied, so I reworked it some. | 01:25 |
10 | 貴方と作るキノコフスキー名曲の時間 The Time You Created a Masterpiece with Kinokovsky |
A Masterpiece Composed with Toadofsky | The melody for this theme is divided into four parts. The first and second were determined by the game mechanics. I got free rein to decide on the third part, and the fourth part was a bit of everything. This wonderful piece was a collaborative effort between the game developers, other fantastic composers, and myself! | 00:29 |
11 | フカフカしましょ! Let's Get Fluffy! |
Let's Get Fluffy! | This is one of those tracks that I composed rather early in the game's development. As soon as I saw Mallow's design and character sheet, this melody started playing in my mind. I think the title's really cute, too. Let's all get fluffy! | 03:06 |
12 | マルガリ・マルガリータ Margari-Margarita |
Valen-Valentina | Baroque was definitely the way to go considering the opulent castle this piece plays in. Takeoka made this arrangement sound fancier than ever. The "Ohohoho!" cackle in the background is pretty much a part of the music itself, so unlike the Sunken Ship track, I've included it in the music. | 02:17 |
13 | ドドが来たっ!! Dodo Has Arrived!! |
Dodo Has Arrived! | I know this might be a bit surprising but...this is actually the very first track I ever composed for Super Mario RPG! When the request came in to compose a piece for a rhythm game section, I made sure the timings for this track were perfect. | 00:57 |
14 | バーレル火山 Barrel Volcano |
Barrel Volcano | This area appears rather late in the game, so I wanted to make the music feel like the journey was nearing its end. | 01:58 |
15 | オノレンジャー参上 The Ono Rangers Visit |
The Axem Rangers Burst In | I wrote this piece before most other tracks. It uses the underground theme, like in "Greetings from the Pipes," and I asked for it to be used somewhere in the game. The developers and I thought it might fit the section where you chase after the Axem Rangers. While the volcano's not exactly underground, it still feels like you're below the surface, and I think the music's tempo matches the pace of the chase well. | 01:21 |
16 | クッパ城(其ノ弐) Koopa Castle (Second Time) |
Bowser's Keep (Second Visit) | It's virtually the same as the first visit to Bowser's Keep but the second half features elements of his battle theme from Super Mario Brothers 3. | 03:02 |
17 | 武器工場 Weapon Factory |
The Factory | The proposal for this one was to create something that sounded disorderly and written in a weird time signature. I took that prompt and ran with it. The result was this track, in a rather tricky 13/8 time... To which the response was "That's unusual, all right...But it's just what we asked for!" | 02:59 |
18 | 対 カジオー戦 VS Kajiō Battle |
Battling Smithy | For Smithy's theme, I was inspired to write something that felt alien, something you wouldn't expect to hear in the world of Mario. It has that off-beat, comedic mood that's in the music for the other weapon bosses. | 02:11 |
19 | 対 変身好きのカジオー戦 VS Transformation-Liking Kajiō Battle |
Battling Smithy's Many Forms | When choosing which instrument was going to play the melody for the Switch version of this piece, we tried a violin solo just to see how it would sound and it rocked! Having a real guitar and bass really added to the intensity of the track. And apologies to everyone who wasn't expecting this boss to transform. (LOL) | 02:41 |
20 | さよならジーノ…〜星の窓から見る夢は Farewell, Geno... ~ Seeing Dreams Through the Window of the Stars |
Farewell, Geno... / The Wishes from the Stars | The Switch version of this piece has some spots that are different from the original. I had to add two extra measures to make the music and cutscene align. The issue was that melodies tend to be written over four measures. How could I add bars in a way that felt natural and didn't disturb the flow of the music? I ended up extending a section of the music by a few bars and worked in a brief three-measure melody elsewhere in the track. | 04:24 |
21 | 楽しいパレード 愉快なパレード〜そしてパレードは行ってしまった… Fun Parade, Cheerful Parade ~ And So, the Parade Draws to a Close... |
Fun Parade, Cheerful Parade / There Goes the Parade... | When writing the SNES track, I was initially told there would be no sound effects playing during the cutscene. Taking advantage of this, I put music data in the channels where sound effects typically play. Later I was told that there were going to be fireworks launching at the end, and I panicked! I opened the sound effect channels back up at the moment the music stops and the screen darkens. | 06:10 |
22 | お・し・ま・い・! T-h-e E-n-d! |
The End! | I can't think of a better song to end the game with. The threat is gone, and peace prevails...yet there's that lingering emptiness now that it's all over. | 03:46 |
