- “This piece couldn't be done without an orchestra. As this music caps off Mario's adventures in space, I dedicated a great deal of time to the composition and performance of this song.”
- —Liner notes for "Super Mario Galaxy" in the Super Mario Galaxy Original Soundtrack
Super Mario Galaxy marks the first appearance of "Overture". The theme's motif is quoted by several other themes in the game, all of which were likewise arranged by Mahito Yokota. The original theme and its arrangements all return for the same purpose in the game's Nintendo Switch ports, Super Mario 3D All-Stars and Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2. They are also featured in the Super Mario Galaxy Original Soundtrack album and in the Nintendo Music app.
"Overture" is quoted in "Battlerock Galaxy", which plays in Battlerock Galaxy and Dreadnought Galaxy.
"The Galaxy Reactor" and "Flying Mario" both incorporate a trumpet quote of "Overture".
The jingle heard when collecting a Power Star is a short arrangement of "Overture". The jingle heard when collecting a Grand Star is a more elaborate arrangement. Unlike Super Mario Galaxy 2's corresponding jingles, these jingles have not been featured on any of the game's soundtrack releases, and as such, their names and composers are unknown.
"Super Mario Galaxy", which plays during the game's credits, is a triumphant reprise of "Overture". It also incorporates an arrangement of "Gusty Garden Galaxy" from the same game. It concludes with an arrangement of the game's Power Star jingle.
