Mud
Mud appears multiple times in the Super Mario franchise as an obstacle, usually slowing the player down.
History[edit]
Mario Kart series[edit]
Super Mario Kart[edit]
Puddles of mud appear in Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart: Super Circuit as obstacles in both Choco Island 1 and Choco Island 2, where driving through them results in the player slowing down and mud being thrown behind the kart. A large portion of Choco Island 2 in particular is taken up by a mud puddle. Mud in Mario Kart: Super Circuit is no longer shown being thrown behind the kart, and the mud was given a lighter texture.
Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]
In Mario Kart: Super Circuit, mud reappears within this game's renditions of the Choco Island courses. It acts the same as before mechanically, though it is no longer shown being thrown behind the kart and the has a lighter texture.
Mario Kart: Double Dash![edit]
In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, mud appears throughout Waluigi Stadium, composing most of the track's off-road areas.
Mario Kart DS[edit]
In Mario Kart DS, mud appears throughout Wario Stadium and in Delfino Square's shortcut prior to the bridge.
Mario Kart Wii[edit]
In Mario Kart Wii, mud reappears in GCN Waluigi Stadium and DS Delfino Square. The cave section of N64 DK's Jungle Parkway has mud added to the off-road portions. The final area behind the Finish line at Toad's Factory also features mud.
Mario Kart 7[edit]
Some mud appears at the starting section of Maka Wuhu in Mario Kart 7.
Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]
In Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the courses DS Wario Stadium and Excitebike Arena are prominently covered in mud. In the Booster Course Pass, mud also appears on GBA Riverside Park and GCN Waluigi Stadium.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
In Mario Kart Tour, the mud found in the returning courses SNES Choco Island 1, SNES Choco Island 2, GBA Sunset Wilds, and DS Luigi's Mansion no longer slows drivers down, instead fulfilling an entirely aesthetic purpose. This type of mud also appears in RMX Choco Island 1 and RMX Choco Island 2.
Patches of thicker-looking mud appear in various other courses, such as SNES Donut Plains 1, SNES Donut Plains 2, SNES Donut Plains 3, GBA Riverside Park, and RMX Donut Plains 1. They typically cover areas closer to the inner edge of a wide curve. They slow drivers down to an extent, much like off-road sections do, but are shown as being part of the drivable track in minimaps. Drivers can also perform Mini-Turbo actions while on this type of mud, albeit without getting speed boosts; likewise, any speed boosts resulted from performing Mini-Turbos are interrupted upon entering a patch of mud. The sand patches inside the temple in Wii Dry Dry Ruins function identically.
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island[edit]
In Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, mud makes up the ground in the swampy areas of World 3. It causes hills to be slippery for the player character.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy and its Nintendo Switch port, mud is found on the Boulder Planet in Good Egg Galaxy. Various sections of mud are on this planet, and standing in it will result in Mario's movement speed and jump height being reduced.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy 2, mud functions the same way as in the previous game. If Rock Mario rolls over mud, he does not slow down. It is found on the Cylindrical Planet in Sky Station Galaxy and the Boulder Planet in Boulder Bowl Galaxy. Mud also appears in Yoshi Star Galaxy, in which it is demonstrated that Yoshi can move effortlessly through mud without losing speed.
Nintendo Land[edit]
In Nintendo Land, mud appears in the Mario Chase stage Mud River Run. The mud separates the different sections of the stage and slows down any player who walks into it, covering them with mud. If the player dressed as Mario collects the Super Star, they are not slowed down by the mud while it is active.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Mud is used to cover Muddy Coins in Dr. Mario World. It can be removed by hitting the coins. Once the mud is cleaned, the player can receive the coin.
Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]
Mud also appears in Donkey Kong Bananza as a soft type of terrain, first encountered in the Hilltop Layer. A slippery material, it usually slows down Donkey Kong, with mounds of mud being especially difficult to traverse. However, he can overcome mud more easily while in Zebra Bananza form. DK slides down a wall of mud if he attempts to climb it, with the Zebra Bananza only helping him hop over shorter ledges. Leading up to Peel Peak in the Hilltop Layer is series of step-like ledges, with sides covered in mud; two nearby Fractones advise the player to use Chunk Jumps in order to climb these steps.
When standing in mud, both DK and Pauline appear concerned and disgusted, with the former trying to shake it off his hands.
