Poppy Kong, Donkey Kong Bananza

Poppy Kong is the director of intelligence of Void Company in Donkey Kong Bananza.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]

Poppy works for Void Kong and aids him in his quest to go to the center of the Earth and claim the Banandium Root. She is first seen in the Lagoon Layer, spying on Donkey Kong and Pauline as they receive the Kong Bananza power from the Kong Elder. She then appears with Void Kong and her co-worker Grumpy Kong at the final sublayer, where the group introduces themselves before leaving them to fight the Peekaboopoid.

Poppy is the first boss of the Freezer Layer, encountered in the Cooling Tower. She attacks the duo but is defeated and surrenders the key to proceed.

Poppy then reappears in The Junction, where she informs her boss that the Pay-Dirt Piledriver is low on fuel and they need to collect more bananas before proceeding.

Poppy is fought for the second time in the Radiance Layer. After being defeated again, Poppy, fed up with Void Kong, decides to quit her job.

Later, Poppy is imprisoned in the Groove Layer's Jail Hall following the Great Harmoneel's attack. Donkey Kong helps her escape from her cell, and she helps him by explaining that the Great Harmoneel had been brainwashed by Void Kong and how to potentially free it from his influence to rescue Pauline, who had been swallowed by the Harmoneel.

In the postgame, Poppy can be found in the Ingot Isle Cave-In and Groove Layer with Grumpy Kong, with whom she has started a construction company. She also appears at the end of the Forbidden Layer, where she confirms to Donkey Kong that Void Kong had in fact survived the events of King K. Rool's return, and also suggests that she desires to track down and "hire" him to overwork him to such an extent that he is left begging for retirement as revenge for his behavior towards her. In one of the post-game loading screens, Poppy is seen patting Pauline's head.

Poppy and Grumpy are mentioned by Void in the game's DLC Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush, where Void speaks ill of their resignations, claiming that DK and Pauline will do a better job than them. They appear on DK Island after clearing the DLC, where they promise to watch over Void to avoid any backstabs from him towards the heroes. Poppy also appears as one of the statues that Squawks can sell to Donkey Kong, displayed in the upper story of the Mountain Cave with Grumpy and Void.

Battle[edit]

During battle, Poppy makes use of her stealth perfume, "Inviseaux by VoidCo", to turn herself invisible. In the first battle, the arena's floor is blanketed with Fresh Snow, while in the second, it is covered in sand. Her dash attacks carve a visible path that enables players to anticipate her movements, dodge her strikes, or land hits to stun her. Successfully stunning her will break her invisibility, allowing Donkey Kong to unleash a flurry of attacks while she is momentarily dazed. After losing one-third of her health, she is propelled across the room, regaining her composure to resume the fight. She can also stun herself after charging up a dash attack that will result in her slamming into a wall if she fails to hit Donkey Kong. As the battle progresses, Poppy's movements become increasingly erratic, evolving from straight lines that ricochet off the walls to zigzag patterns. Poppy's movement trajectory becomes less clear as the removable surfaces on the floor disappear, but after losing enough surface, more snow or sand will fall from the ceiling to cover up the floor.

During her second fight, Poppy is much faster, requiring Donkey Kong to use the Snake Bananza's Glare and slow down time to attack her. She will also hop to uncover less surface.

Physical appearance[edit]

Poppy Kong is a tall and slender lutung-like Kong. She wears expensive-looking clothing with gold accessories, glasses and lipstick, and has white hair with purple highlights and a purple tail. Her glasses, which are "VoidCo IntelliSense Specs", possess sensors that allow her to locate objects, such as in the Groove Layer where she uses them to locate the Terravoiders that shut off the layer's music.

Quotes[edit]

Lagoon Layer
  • "Hmm... The president will be most intrigued."
  • "Mr. President, she's here."
  • "May I remind you, you're speaking to the president of Void Company... only the most powerful mining organization on the planet. The president has launched a old new extraction venture. Our destination is..."
Freezer Layer
  • "I'm the Director of Intelligence for VoidCo. But you can call me Poppy Kong."
  • "So my mission has failed. You saw right through my stealth perfume. I did not see that coming. Yes, darlings, you beat me fair and square. So I'll give you the key."
The Junction
  • "Mr. President, we need fuel. If we don't go back and get more bananas..."
Radiance Layer
  • "Darlings, you're just in time... to test my newly improved fragrance, Inviseaux by VoidCo!"
  • "I see how things are. This operation has been a joke. There's no profit to be had, that's for sure. Well, I won't waste my talents any longer. I'm out. I resign."
  • "Pauline... I underestimated that power of yours. It's... remarkable."
  • "Hmph. Well, no matter. I'm done doing business with that fool of a president. Which means I have no reason to get in your way."
Forbidden Layer
  • "Well, well. Can't say I expected to meet the two of you in such a desolate place. Are you looking for something?"
    • (Replying "Bananas!") "You never change, do you?"
    • (Replying "Void"?) "He put you through all that...and you still want to see his face?"
  • "You know, I came here looking to see if I could find any trace of Void, and you're not going to believe it but..."
  • "I found him trapped in the wreckage of his own machine!"
  • "He was absolutely stuck and throwing quite the tantrum, as you can imagine. It was delicious!"
  • "But Grumpy took pity on the awful imp and released him. He took off as fast as he could."
  • "Anyway, he's alive and well, it seems."
  • "Perhaps one day I'll find him and put him on our payroll. I'll work him so hard, he'll be begging for an early retirement."
  • "Well, you can't blame a Kong for dreaming."
