The entrance to a Battle Challenge

Battle Challenges are a type of sub-area in Donkey Kong Bananza. They are accessed by removing the seal off of circular entrances made of Neptunite, and then attacking them, revealing a red loading zone to the Battle Challenge. In a Battle Challenge, Donkey Kong must defeat all of its enemies—which are typically of a single type—in 30 seconds. Failing to do this, either by the time limit expiring or losing health, results in Donkey Kong being defeated. Completing the challenge warps Donkey Kong to the Battle Challenge's "lobby" area, where gold equal to the number of seconds remaining on the timer will fall on Donkey Kong. This area contains a single round platform with a Banandium Gem on it, a Barrel Cannon floating above it, and a red pit surrounding it. Additionally, Pauline will make a comment depedendant on the remaining time.

Every layer except DK Island, Ingot Isle Cave-In, and the Planet Core features Battle Challenges, totalling fifty-nine Battle Challenges. Every Battle Challenge has a title derived from its enemies, along with a code consisting of the layer and number within the layer. A splash screen displaying the Battle Challenge's title and code, as well as a banana icon showing if the player has collected the Banandium Gem from the Battle Challenge, is shown before beginning the challenge.

Certain Battle Challenges require Donkey Kong to transform into a particular Bananza to enter the Battle Challenge. This is communicated to the player through depictions of the required Bananza on the entrance. Donkey Kong cannot switch to a different Bananza, nor can he transform into his base form, while in these Battle Challenges.

Challenge Courses, Bonus Stages, and Challenge Rushes are similar types of ruins.

Any given Battle Challenge that Donkey Kong has entered is displayed on the Map. If Donkey Kong has collected its Banandium Gem, it is only displayed on the Map when the filter is set to "Found Bananas". "Battle Challenge" plays during a Battle Challenge, while "Battle Challenge Lobby" plays at the lobby area.
