The entrance to a Challenge Course

Challenges Courses are a type of sub-area in Donkey Kong Bananza. They are accessed by removing the seal off of triangular entrances made of Neptunite, and then attacking them, revealing a white loading zone to the Challenge Course. Each Challenge Course features three Banandium Gems. In most Challenge Courses, a Banandium Gem is found partway through the course, at the end of the course, and hidden in the course. This layout of collectibles is comparable to the placement of Power Moons in sub-areas from Super Mario Odyssey.

Every layer except DK Island, Ingot Isle Cave-In, and the Planet Core features one to five Challenge Courses, dependent on the size of the layer, totalling fifty Challenge Courses. Every Challenge Course has a unique title, along with a code consisting of the layer and number within the layer. A splash screen displaying the Challenge Course's title and code, as well as the Banandium Gems the player is missing from the Challenge Course, is shown before beginning the course.

Certain Challenge Courses require Donkey Kong to transform into a particular Bananza to enter the Challenge Course. This is communicated to the player through depictions of the required Bananza on the entrance. Donkey Kong cannot switch to a different Bananza, nor can he transform into his base form, while in these Challenge Courses.

Challenge Courses are ruins from an ancient civilization that originated in the Groove Layer. Battle Challenges, Bonus Stages, and Challenge Rushes are similar types of ruins.

Any given Challenge Course that Donkey Kong has entered is displayed on the Map. If Donkey Kong has collected all Banandium Gems from it, it is only displayed on the Map when the filter is set to "Found Bananas". There are nine themes that play during Challenge Courses: "Challenge Course #1", "Challenge Course #2", "Challenge Course #3", "Challenge Course #4", "Challenge Course #5", "2D Challenge Course #1", "2D Challenge Course #2", "2D Challenge Course #3", and "2D Challenge Course #4".

Some Challenge Courses are based on levels from previous Donkey Kong franchise games. Each one has its own DK Challenge Challenge Card.
