Sinkhole
- Not to be confused with Sink Whole.
Sinkholes in Donkey Kong Bananza serve to connect the various layers of the Underground World. They are often, though not always, guarded by a boss or tough enemy and can be accessed by breaking a Void Stake dropped by the defeated boss. Their environments mirror those of the layers they connect.
While Donkey Kong is diving down a sinkhole, the player can hold down the Jump button to slow down his descent, or speed it up with a Dive Punch by holding down any of the three punch buttons. A bar on the right side of the screen shows the progress made towards reaching the next layer, measured in sublayers. Additionally, a gold meter appears in the top right of the screen, which measures only the gold collected while diving down the sinkhole. This is then added to the player's total upon reaching the next layer.
Whenever Donkey Kong dives down a particular sinkhole for the first time and Pauline is present, she will converse with him.
There are a total of eighteen sinkholes in the game, including the one created by the Banandium Root during King K. Rool's boss fight following the joke "Kredits" sequence. The Banandium Root carries Donkey Kong and Pauline upwards to New Donk City while they fend off King K. Rool. After Pauline encourages Donkey Kong to chase his own dreams following K. Rool, King of Rot's defeat, he dives back down this hole during the staff credits sequence.
The sinkhole between Ingot Isle Cave-In and the Lagoon Layer can only be used once per save file, as it is created by the destruction of Baboomtown and the next time the former layer is accessible, during the post-game, it has been covered over by Grumpy Kong and Poppy Kong for safety reasons, and is the site over which Baboomtown can be rebuilt.
Additionally, there is a sinkhole created by the Great Harmoneel in the Groove Layer once he is summoned. However, it is inaccessible; instead, Donkey Kong dives into the Great Harmoneel's gullet to rescue Pauline, and once the two are reunited, they end up teleported near the bottom of the sinkhole which connects the Radiance Layer and the Feast Layer. When returning to the Groove Layer, the sinkhole is covered by a metal grate.
