Funky Kong's surfboard,[1] also referred to as Funky's surfboard,[1] is an object that makes a handful of appearances throughout the Donkey Kong franchise. Although Funky Kong has been shown alongside a surfboard in several occasions, his surfboard did not have any gameplay appearances until Mario Super Sluggers, where a white one serves as Funky Kong's bat, nor a consistent design until the Nintendo Switch reissue of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, where it is shown as a wooden board shoddily painted red, with a white, vertical stripe on the bottom.

History[edit]

In the Nintendo Switch reissue of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Funky Kong's surfboard appears as part of Funky Kong's moveset in the game's Funky Mode. Funky Kong will ride on his surfboard whenever he jumps, allowing him to perform a double jump, hover for a bit, and stand safely on spiked floors, effectively giving him abilities similar to those of Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong and Cranky Kong from the Original Mode, respectively. Additionally, Funky Kong can use his surfboard to skip on water surfaces.

Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]

In the DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC pack for Donkey Kong Bananza, surfboards bearing the same design of Funky's surfboard in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze are found on several shores at DK Island; these include on the shallows inbetween the Warp Gong and the beached Gangplank Galleon, right next to Squawks's Hut on the Southwest Beach, against a stone wall on the Northeast Islet, and at a small beach next to the Northwest Beach. Donkey Kong can use these surfboards to surf on the layer's water, although he requires the Surf Surf skill in order to do this. Donkey Kong cannot use the surfboards to Turf Surf on regular terrain, as he will switch back to carrying the object immediately, even with Surf Surf unlocked.

Inside DK's Tree House on DK Island, a surfboard resembling Funky's surfboard from the first Donkey Kong Country can also be seen hanging on the wall, reading "SURF DK ISLAND" instead of "SURF NINTENDO". This board can also be picked up and surfed on.

Super Nintendo World[edit]

The Funky's Fly 'n' Buy gift shop at the Donkey Kong Country sub-area of Super Nintendo World features a signboard made of a white and green surfboard that resembles Funky Kong's surfboard from Donkey Kong Country.
