Poison water,[1] also referred to as simply poison,[2] is an obstacle in Donkey Kong Bananza that primarily appears in the Forest Layer. It is depicted as a steaming, transparent purple liquid. While Donkey Kong is touching poison water, including when running along its surface with the Zebra Bananza, he will continuously take damage. Wearing the Yellow Britches or Poison-Proof Britches decreases the rate of damage caused by poison water, the former by 10% and the latter by 20%, 30%, or 40% depending on its current upgrade level.

As with other fluids in the game, most objects and enemies are destroyed upon coming into contact with poison water. Fractones are shown to be able to withstand poison water, as one Fractone comments that poison water tickles them while bathing in it. Poison water cannot be destroyed, and it will pool in empty spaces that are otherwise not connected to the main body of water.

While similar to poison swamps from the Super Mario series in terms of appearance and ability to damage the player, poison water is depicted as having a lower viscosity and opacity that is closer to water. When poison water is inhaled using the Elephant Bananza, water chunks are stored in Donkey Kong's trunk.

All three sublayers of the Forest Layer are located within lakes of poison water. A poison waterfall appears in sublayer 600, and the Eggshell Hotel in this sublayer additionally features two pools of poison water appear on its third and fifth floors. In sublayer 601, three poison plants spew poison. Destroying a poison plant causes the sublayer's water level to lower, and sublayer 602 becomes accessible once all three poison plants are destroyed.

Abracajabya, the boss fought in sublayer 602 of the Forest Layer, sprouts from pools of poison water. Attacking the sublayer's Void Stake and beginning the boss battle causes the sublayer's water level to lower, revealing several pools of poison water for Abracajabya to use. Loading screen artwork reveals that Abracajabya was watered with poison water by Grumpy Kong. The enclosed arena where Abracajabya is refought in the Bunch of Boss Battles Challenge Rush likewise contains poison water.

Void Company is responsible for introducing the poison plants and Abracajabya to the Forest Layer, causing it to flood with poison water. Whether poison was present in the Forest Layer prior to Void Company's actions is left ambiguous.
