Emerald Perk
Emerald Perks, also called simply Perks, are a set of modifiers the player can temporarily obtain during an Emerald Rush run in Donkey Kong Bananza. Perks are a core gameplay element of Emerald Rush, as they increase the amount of emeralds Donkey Kong earns over the course of the run through multipliers, such as emerald increases for defeating a specific enemy type, using Bananzas, or performing a certain action repeatedly. Most Perk effects can be stacked, and many different multipliers can be active at once. Each time the player earns a Perk, they are presented with three randomly selected options to choose from.
Perk selection[edit]
A new Perk may be selected each time the player collects a fossil, breaks a Banandium Gem that is currently offering a skill unlock, or completes a Void Goal. Whenever one of these conditions is satisfied, the Perk selection menu appears automatically, requiring the player to pick an option. In addition to the three random Perks, the player may elect to restore DK's health or change the current Void Goal instead of selecting a Perk. At the cost of some collected emeralds, the Refresh option may also be used to replace the currently offered Perks with three new random options. Refreshing initially costs 50 emeralds, with each subsequent refresh costing an ever-increasing amount.
| Current cost greater than or equal to |
Cost increase after use |
|---|---|
| 50 | 50 |
| 200 | 100 |
| 1000 | 1000 |
| 10000 | 10000 |
| 100000 | 100000 |
| 1000000 | 1000000 |
With few exceptions, selecting a certain Perk does not prevent it from appearing again later. Most Perks can be selected multiple times over the course of a run to stack their effects, while those that are not multiplier-based will repeat their initial effect when selected again. Stackable Perks have a chance to be offered in a "rare" form where multiple copies of the Perk can be obtained at once, while some non-stackable Perks are always considered rare (these are denoted with a circular rather than octagonal icon). Rare Perks have an increased chance to appear when collecting a rare or extra-rare fossil or a Banandium Gem bunch, and the chance can also be increased by wearing certain clothing.
After reaching 2000 Rating Points in Emerald Rush and completing the mode's credits sequence, the player gains the ability to block Perks from appearing during the current run by spending Emerald Chips. One or more of the randomly offered Perks may be blocked whenever the player is in the Perk selection menu. The first blocked Perk will cost one chip, and the cost of blocking increases by one additional chip each time a Perk is blocked.
Not all Perks are available initially, with some requiring reaching various thresholds of Rating Points to become available during runs. Additionally, some layers exclude Perks which would have no effect there; for example, Glitzoid Demolisher is only available on layers where Glitzoids exist, and Turnip Greens is only available on layers where turnips can be found.
When participating in the periodic Emerald Rush events, a fixed set of Perks is made available, and the option to block Perks by spending Emerald Chips is disabled.
Emerald multipliers[edit]
Initially, all sources of emeralds, such as bullion, enemies, and destructible terrain, yield as much emerald ore as they would normally yield gold, which is displayed during gameplay with "×1.0" multiplier text as DK uncovers emeralds. These amounts can be increased through the use of Perks. Most Perks provide a multiplier that increases the amount of emerald ore obtained from certain sources; multiple copies of the same Perk can be selected to stack its effects additively, and if more than one type of Perk is active that affects a given source, their multipliers will be added or multiplied together.
Multiplier-based Perks display their effects in terms of a percentage increase. For example, one copy of the Crockoid Demolisher Perk provides a 120% increase in emerald ore appearing after a Crockoid is defeated. A 120% increase is equivalent to a multiplication by 2.2, so when defeating a Crockoid during gameplay, the multiplier text "×2.2" would appear. Each additional copy of a Perk adds the same initial percentage amount, so two copies of Crockoid Demolisher would provide a 240% increase, or ×3.4 multiplier.
The final multiplier for a given emerald source is calculated with both addition and multiplication of the relevant Perk effects, depending on which group each Perk belongs to. Perk groups are visible in the HUD during gameplay, as seen in the screenshot on the right; there are five groups separated vertically in the HUD, with the three in the middle being the ones that affect the emerald multiplier (the topmost group contains rare Perks that unlock additional Bananza abilities, and the lowermost group contains Perks related to item and treasure chest chances and other boosts with no direct effect on the emerald multiplier). The Perk multipliers within these three groups are first added together, then the total values from each group are multiplied together.[1]
Emerald multiplier = (group 1 Perk + group 1 Perk) × (group 2 Perk + group 2 Perk + group 2 Perk) × (group 3 Perk)
Because the multiplication yields much larger values than the addition, the best way to attain a high emerald multiplier is to choose Perks across all three groups. Group 1 primarily contains Perks in the categories of Hoarder, Groove, and Heart, and others that are based on DK's current status. Group 2 primarily contains Demolisher Perks as well as Perks related to emerald ore unearthed from breakable materials. Group 3 exclusively contains Beat Perks.
The final multiplier result is capped at a maximum of ×99999.9. Different chimes are played with increasing multipliers, and once the multiplier reaches ×10000.0, it changes to a jingle based on the sound effect used when Mario jumps over a barrel in Donkey Kong. The HUD is limited to displaying 60 Perk instances in each group, but the full list can be viewed in the pause menu.
The multiplier for defeating enemies can decay, being cut in half repeatedly if the player stays in one location fighting the same enemies for too long (this does not apply to Peekaboopoids). Once the multiplier has decayed, it will gradually recover after the player leaves that area.
