Shine Thief battle in Sweet Sweet Kingdom
Shine Thief mode in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Shine Thief is a Battle mode that first appeared in Mario Kart: Double Dash!! and returned in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The mode centers around a Shine Sprite first placed in a random spot on the course. Once a driver grabs it, they must hold on to it without getting hit by any items. If they get hit by an item, they drop the Shine Sprite and another driver has a chance to get it. By using a Dash Mushroom, Star, or Feather, drivers are able to steal the Shine Sprite directly. If a driver holds the Shine Sprite until the timer reaches zero, they win.

History[edit]

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

In Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, the timer starts at 60 seconds. Every time a driver drops the Shine Sprite, the timer will also lose a few extra seconds. When nobody has the Shine Sprite, each battle course has a unique theme, but while a driver has the Shine Sprite, a special theme plays instead.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the mode can be played with and without teams. In order to win, a driver now has to hold on to the Shine Sprite for a total of 20 (30 in team battle) counts (one count is equal to about two seconds) to win. The timers now count individually, meanining if a different driver picks up the Shine Sprite, their own timer will start from 20. If a driver picks up the Shine Sprite after having held it previously, their time will continue from where it stopped. However, if a driver drops the Shine Sprite when the number of remaining counts is below five and then picks it up again, the timer restarts from five.

The driver currently carrying the Shine Sprite moves slower than normal, and also wears a crown on their head. A game ends when one driver successfully finishes all 20 counts or five minutes pass without anybody completing 20 counts. When the game ends, the total time each driver held the Shine Sprite is counted toward their total points. Unlike in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, no specific music is used when the Shine Sprite is in a driver's possession.
