All-Terrain Vehicle
All-Terrain Vehicles (commonly abbreviated as ATVs), known as Quad Bikes or just Quads in the British English version, are a type of vehicle in Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, alongside karts and bikes.
The basic model of the ATV for all characters is the Standard ATV, which varies in color and paint design depending on the character, similar to the other Standard vehicles. The game considers all the ATV bodies "karts", as CPU players can be found using ATVs when the CPU vehicle body options are set to "Karts Only". As with karts, ATVs can perform the fire-hopping and demon-sliding techniques in Mario Kart 8.
When riding ATVs, Peach, Daisy, Rosalina, Pink Gold Peach, Pauline, and Peachette wear their biker outfits. Characters riding ATVs share most animations with those in bikes yet have slightly different idling and drifting animations.
The Bone Rattler becomes available through purchase of the Animal Crossing × Mario Kart 8 DLC pack.
Two new ATVs, Splat Buggy and Inkstriker, appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the Nintendo Switch. Both vehicles are based on Splatoon and appear alongside the new Inklings introduced in this game.
ATVs do not reappear in Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart World. In Mario Kart Tour, the only returning ATV, the Wild Wiggler, is instead reclassified as a kart. In Mario Kart World, the ATV class is replaced by trikes[Japanese] and mobiles[Japanese]. However, the Bowser Bruiser, one of the karts in this game, resembles the Standard ATV.
