“The main feature of this course's design is that it has two separate but intersecting roads. I wanted to bring this across in the music with both a melody line and a separate obbligato line. The drum sound centered on the tom-toms gives the sense of discovering an unknown land.”
Liner notes in the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack

"Ice Ice Outpost"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Yasuaki Iwata that appears in Mario Kart 8, where it plays in the race course of the same name. The theme features mostly synth instruments for both the leads and the bass, but is also lead by a string instrument and an occasional, subtle piano. The theme also has a glockenspiel supporting the melody with frequent call and response.

History[edit]

Mario Kart series[edit]

Mario Kart 8 / Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Mario Kart 8 marks the first appearance of "Ice Ice Outpost".

Like with the rest of the courses in Mario Kart 8, a looping drum set beat is added over the theme whenever the player is driving at top speed while in first place.

The theme would go on to return in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the same purpose, and appear in the Mario Kart 8 Original Soundtrack.
