Sand tides,[1] also referred to as sandbars,[2] are hazards in the Super Mario franchise that move vertically.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
Sand tides debut in Super Mario World, appearing in Donut Plains 2 and Valley of Bowser 2. They are similar to shifting walls, but are yellow platforms cut in various various shapes and sizes. If Mario/Luigi stands in one area with a sand tide with narrow ceilings or floors nearby and gets crushed between the two if the sand tide pushes him too close, he will instantly lose a life. If Mario/Luigi were to dismount Yoshi and leave him behind in such areas where he would otherwise be crushed to death by the sand tide and the narrow ceiling/floor should the area get too narrow once the former gets too close and Yoshi alone gets crushed in the process, this will result in Yoshi potentially being sucked upwards into the ceiling and offscreen.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
In Super Mario Galaxy, sand tides appear in Dusty Dune Galaxy. In the Pyramid Planet, they appear in the form of walls that move up or down when activated. Once all five Silver Stars are collected, the sand tides sink and disappear. On the Sand Tide Planet, it slowly moves up and down and have stumps, notes, and coins hidden in it.
