Soft rock[1] is a type of block that appears in the Yoshi series. Soft rock is composed of thinly packed rock that can appear in various different color schemes depending on where it is found, most typically either yellow or light gray. Tiles of soft rock automatically merge with other soft rock tiles adjacent to them, visually appearing as a single mass that reshapes itself as individual blocks are broken. Soft rock can be broken using almost any attack, including jumping into it from below; spitting seeds by using a green watermelon, which breaks pieces of soft rock one at a time; or by ground-pounding soft rock from above or throwing eggs at it, which can destroy large amounts of soft rock at once as the ground-pounding Yoshi or egg pierces through the soft rock as it travels. Chomp Rocks also break soft rock in front of and underneath them as they roll, and a Yoshi can easily dig through soft rock while in his Mole Tank form. Some enemies are capable of destroying soft rock as well, most particularly Chomp Sharks, which tear through large amounts of soft rock as they chase a Yoshi, but also Lakitus' Spiny Eggs and bombs dropped by Item Balloons and similar sources. These enemies are typically encountered in areas where the ground is mostly made up of soft rock, making traversal dangerous for a Yoshi. Soft rock typically contains nothing when broken, but it can occasionally hide Winged Clouds and Smiley Flowers.

Soft rock appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (as well as its reissue) and Yoshi's Island DS.

During the development of Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, soft rock pieces could also be licked up by a Yoshi.[2]

Soft rock appears in Yoshi's Woolly World under the name spongy earth.[3] Reflecting the game's craft aesthetic, it takes the form of sponge in Sponge Cave Spelunking and styrofoam in the Mole Yoshi section of Duplicitous Delve.
