Unbreakable blocks[1] are blocks that have a distinctive four-triangle shape resembling certain depictions of the floor from Mario Bros. True to their name, they cannot be destroyed in any way.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Unbreakable blocks first appear in Super Mario Bros. 3, where they are functional successors to the stairblocks from Super Mario Bros. They are usually a light blue color, though in certain areas, they appear in different colors, and Super Mario All-Stars makes them a uniform slate-gray. They are found most frequently in fortresses, where they often are used as the structure's ceilings, walls, and floors.
New Super Mario Bros. series[edit]
Unbreakable blocks return in New Super Mario Bros. starting in World 1-4, having the same basic design. They now appear in addition to hard yet breakable stone blocks that can be destroyed by certain entities such as Mega Mario and Super Thwomps. Unbreakable blocks reappear with the same role in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, and New Super Luigi U.
Super Mario Maker series[edit]
In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, ground takes the appearance of unbreakable blocks in the castle theme of the Super Mario Bros. 3 game style.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Unbreakable blocks appear in Super Mario Bros. Wonder in addition to Hard Blocks, which can be broken by certain entities, much like before.
Alleyway[edit]
Unbreakable blocks appear in Alleyway, where they cannot be destroyed with a ball. They are larger than breakable blocks and take up two lines instead of one. The ball bounces off these blocks. Unbreakable blocks can be destroyed only in the Advancing Block Screen pattern, where they can be removed after reaching a certain point on the screen. It can also cut these blocks in half. Unbreakable blocks do not appear in Bonuses.
In the first three stages, unbreakable blocks protect the ball from touching the ceiling to prevent the paddle from getting smaller.
Unbreakable blocks appear in the following stages:
- Stage 1
- Stage 2
- Stage 3
- Stage 10
- Stage 11
- Stage 12
- Stage 16

Super Paper Mario[edit]
Unbreakable blocks[2] appear in Super Paper Mario with a similar role. They are generally colored brown, making them look even more similar to the original stairblocks from Super Mario Bros.
