Player shadows[1] in Super Mario Bros. Wonder are representations of other players from around the world that may appear in levels when playing in online mode. They take the form of colored silhouettes of the players' characters and, using their play data, behave the same way as when they played the level, though they are intangible and their movements and actions do not affect the main player's world. If the player becomes a ghost after being defeated, they can be revived by touching a player shadow.
Shadows of other players playing at the same time are referred to as live player shadows.[2] These shadows appear as translucent versions of the full character models and can be interacted with to a greater degree, such as by exchanging reactions in real time and passing by them to reveal their username and Heart Point count. Live player shadows are also able to pop Item Balloons created by the main player, and vice versa. If the player and all live player shadows finish the level at the same time, they earn Heart Points. While the main player is a ghost, live player shadows become more visible.
