Ice blocks[1]:15 are objects first appearing in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. They are formed when the player throws an ice ball at an enemy while they are in their Ice form or Penguin form, causing the enemy to freeze. Ice blocks can be picked up and thrown like barrels or ground pounded to release the enemy within, defeating it and yielding several coins; if thrown, the ice block acts as a sliding weapon that takes out any enemies in its path, breaking if it hits a wall with enough speed. After a while, the enemy will eventually try to free itself, the effect of which varies from enemy to enemy. Some will be defeated upon breaking free, but others will break out without taking damage. Ice blocks cannot be melted with the Fire Flower's fireballs.

History[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

The first appearance of ice blocks is in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where they can first be created in World 1-2, as it is the first appearance of the Ice Flower. Some types of enemies are unaffected by ice balls (namely bosses, mini-bosses, large enemies, and Boos), so said enemies will break out almost immediately if hit, only stunning them for a while.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Ice blocks return in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, with the same types of enemies being invulnerable to the Ice Flower, alongside some new ones such as Grrrols. As they are the first levels to feature the Ice Flower, Ice Blocks can first be created in Crushing-Cogs Tower in New Super Mario Bros. U, and in Flame-Gear Tower for New Super Luigi U.

Illumination films[edit]

In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, when Peach uses the Ice Flower to stop Bowser, his wedding guests, and the cage mechanism, the frozen victims are not encased in cubic blocks. Instead, their ice prison is a clutter that conforms to their shapes.

In The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, however, when Ice Mario fist bumps Luigi, he accidentally freezes him in a cubic ice block.
