Red-and-yellow blocks,[1] or red Blocks,[2] are switches that control platforms in New Super Mario Bros. These switches are suspended in the air like blocks, but they can be struck an innumerable number of times. Striking a red-and-yellow block once triggers nearby platforms to start moving or materialize. Striking it a second time makes them stop or disappear. The type of platforms impacted depends on the level.

The switches first appear in World 2-Tower after the level's midway point. Striking them causes rotating platforms to materialize, allowing Mario (or Luigi) to reach one of the level's Star Coins and the boss room with Bowser Jr. Striking the switches again causes the rotating platforms to disappear. Red-and-yellow blocks subsequently appear in World 8-Castle. Striking them causes nearby Flatbed Ferries to move, a function similar to ON/OFF Switches from Super Mario World. Striking the red-and-yellow blocks is necessary to collect all of the level's Star Coins.
