New Super Mario Bros. Podcast is a series of video podcasts published on andithink.com and feeds.feedburner.com by GoTV Networks in 2006. Within the podcasts, Daylan Williams interviews Shigeru Miyamoto and Mario (voiced by Charles Martinet and portrayed by an unknown actor in a full-body Mario costume), in addition to reviewing New Super Mario Bros. and the Nintendo DS Lite. The video series was made to promote New Super Mario Bros., though the Nintendo DS Lite–focused episode also features other games, such as Diddy Kong Racing DS and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis. Said episode is the only one not hosted by Daylan; the episode is instead hosted by Marta Costello.

- What’s happening, y'all? Nintendo is still riding the wave of excitement following the Electronic Entertainment Expo here in Los Angeles. Video gamers got an up‑close look at both the Nintendo DS Lite and the newest addition to the family, the New Super Mario Brothers. Everyone knows that Mario is one of the best‑known and best‑loved guys in all of video games. We got a chance to sit down for an exclusive interview with the man who created him, one of the greatest video game designers of all time, Shigeru Miyamoto. Check this out. When you created Mario, did you think that he would become such a franchise player for Nintendo? And how did you actually come up with the initial character, Jumpman, which later became Mario?
- Shigeru Miyamoto
- Well, when I first created the Mario character, my intention was to use Mario as a character in a lot of different games, but not so much as a main character, more as just kind of a sub‑character who makes cameos. And I didn’t really think that he was going to become this really popular franchise character, like you said.
- Daylan
- The New Super Mario Brothers, it seems like you’ve really gotten back to some of the original themes, and even when I was playing the game, it took me straight back to the original Super Mario Brothers game, but it’s kind of updated. Now, one of those features that is kind of a returning element is the linear path of the game. Why did you decide to go back to that style of gaming?
- Shigeru Miyamoto
- Yeah, obviously, with New Super Mario Brothers, we’re really hoping to take advantage of the nostalgia factor that a lot of people have for Mario, especially people who played the original Super Mario Brothers back in the day and maybe haven’t played a lot of games since. We’re hoping that they’ll pick it up. But even beyond that, we’re really hoping that with this game, we can capture the attention and the interest of people who never played the original one as well.
- Daylan
- Now, what’s the direction that you’re taking the New Super Mario Brothers game, and what are some of the highlights that the fans can look forward to in this new one?
- Shigeru Miyamoto
- Nintendo's focus nowadays really is on creating games that anyone can play, and that target people of all age ranges, from age five up to age 95. And we’ve found that in the video game industry, gradually, as games get more and more difficult, it becomes harder and harder for people who don’t play games to actually get in and play. But the original Super Mario Brothers was a game that was very simple to play. You immediately knew what you were doing, and it was something that touched a lot of people, and really, people of all ages were able to play that game.
- And so with New Super Mario Brothers for the Nintendo DS, we really wanted to go back to that Mario start line. With the original Super Mario Brothers, the basic concept was that you have Mario, who starts off little, and he’ll grab a mushroom and then get bigger. And so based on this large and small element and the Fire Flowers, you have these different rules that you try to take advantage of as you play your way to the end of the game.
- This time, with New Super Mario Brothers, those rules are going to be expanded, maybe a little more complicated. You’ll have the mushrooms, but then you can get things like the Mega Mushroom, where Mario will get that and grow to a size that takes up almost the entire screen. People are having a whole lot of fun just being able to plow through blocks and things like that, and it’s really a fun element to the game.
- One thing we really wanted to do with New Super Mario Brothers was take all the elements that people have known, all the abilities that Mario has had, and the elements from those games that people have known for so long, and find a way to take those, bring them all into one package, and have it be something that’s very fun but very simple and easy to do. So in that sense, we’ve really focused on bringing these core elements from the different games together.
- At the same time, we've taken the graphics and totally changed them. And so you get to have some of the classic feel of the past Mario games with these new elements added in. And then at the same time, you have these new graphics, where you get to see Mario moving around. He’s much better animated. It looks a lot better and cleaner. And so on all levels, it’s really going to give people a new experience that feels familiar and that they’re really going to enjoy.
- Daylan
- What... Once E3 is done, and once you release the Wii system, what are you doing after that? You taking a nice, long vacation?
- Shigeru Miyamoto
- Yeah, actually, I still have a lot of things that I want to create. So usually, when I get done with a project, I start work on the next game, and that’s always been a lot of fun for me. But I’ll take a little bit of time off and maybe spend some time playing Wii with my family and with my dog.
- Daylan
- New Super Mario Brothers hits shelves May 15th, followed by the release of Nintendo DS Lite on June 11th.

- This is about as close as you can get to the New Super Mario Brothers. We’re inside to get all the details on the newest addition to the Mario empire. It’s hard to believe it all started in 1985 with Super Mario Brothers. That game still stands in the Guinness Book of World Records as the best‑selling video game of all time. So the strategy behind this newest game is definitely spot on: nostalgia, nostalgia, nostalgia. Everything you love about the original is here, the catchy music, the characters, the side‑scrolling, but there’s so much more. Incredible graphics and hot, new power‑ups, to name a couple. New Super Mario Brothers for Nintendo DS is the latest in a long line of Mario games.
- When you see the 3D graphics in this game, prepare to be amazed. These images are sharp, and that makes the new power‑ups just that much more fun. Adding on to Mario’s arsenal of Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, and Invincible Stars, New Super Mario Brothers gives us the blue turtle shell and the Mega Mushroom. Years of stomping Koopas, and sometimes having them fire back at our hero, have taught us just how powerful that shell is. Now’s your chance to be impervious with the blue turtle shell, which gives Mario a devastating spin attack.
- And perhaps the most fun of this game is in the mega mushroom. The mega mushroom turns Mario into Mega Mario, and he fills the entire screen, obliterating anything in his path. One more cool new thing in this game is that it uses both screens of Nintendo DS. When you’re above ground, the screen below charts your progress and lets you know where you are on the level. But when you go subterranean and slide down a pipe, suddenly the play takes place on that bottom screen, making the experience feel as real as it can. Well, that is, without green screen technology, anyways. So whether you’re a Mario pro or you haven’t played with our Italian plumbing friend in years, this game is for you. New Super Mario Brothers for Nintendo DS is the perfect blend of modern and vintage. Check it out. The game is now in stores everywhere.

- What’s happening, y’all? Daylan here. Now, this past E3, we were able to catch up with a legend, the man, the myth. He's been doing it for mad years, my man, none other than Mario. How you doing, brother?
- Mario
- Thank you very much, Daylan. Mamma mia, it's‑a my pleasure to be here talking with you.
- Daylan
- Yeah, no doubt, no doubt. It’s my pleasure, brother, my pleasure now.
- Mario
- Thank you very much.
- Daylan
- All right, now, I’m sure plenty of the fans have a ton of things they wanna know about, but let’s start with the latest project, New Super Mario Brothers for Nintendo DS. A lot of people can’t wait to get their hands on this one. So what makes this new one so special?
- Mario
- Hoo‑hoo! Ah, the New Super Mario Brothers. You know, Daylan, there are a lot of gameses out there starring me, Mario, but the New Super Mario Brothers, it's-a like a blast‑a from the past‑a. It's‑a my first new side‑scrolling platform game since the day, you know, back in the day of the Super NES. Hoo-hoo! It’s got a great-a look to it, complete with all of my Mushroom Kingdom friendses. Plus, I get to try out some new sweet moves.
- Daylan
- Wait, man, don’t leave me hanging.
- Mario
- Well, first of all, I’m‑a get to do all of my classic moveses, like‑a the stomping the Goombas. And if I get a Fire Flower, I can shoot‑a the fireballses. And Starman make‑a Mario in-a-vincible. Hoo-hoo! I can even do all sorts of cuckoo crazy jumps, like-a triple jumpses and-a wall jumpses. Ha‑ha!
- Daylan
- Shoot, now, that sounds dangerous. How do you... You look good. It’s not even funny. You look good. You’re in shape. Everything is straight. But how do you get yourself ready for something like that?
- Mario
- Thank you very much. Well, keep in mind, Daylan, I’m‑a been doing this for about 25 years of-a the pasta... I mean, the practice. Ha-ha! Plus, I'm‑a stretch‑a a lot-a, but I wouldn’t recommend trying these moveses at home, you all. Remember, Mario is a professional.
- Daylan
- Yeah, you got a lot of years under your belt, a lot of experience.
- Mario
- Yeah, yeah.
- Daylan
- What other - you know, what other moves are we gonna see you do?
- Mario
- Let me tell you, I got a lot under my belt-a, period. But this time, I got a few great new trickses up‑a my sleeve.
- Daylan
- Right, some new styles for '06. Break them down, man. What we got?
- Mario
- Well, you know, mushrooms have always helped‑a Mario, but the two new ones... Hee-hee-hee! When- you just got to see it to believe it. One turns me into Mini Mario. I'm‑a so cute when I’m like-a that-a.
- Daylan
- Small?
- Mario
- Oh yeah, little teeny‑teeny meeny‑weeny bitty me.
- Daylan
- Right.
- Mario
- But I can also become the Mega Mario. I'm-a huge. It’s-a like-a, attack of the 50‑foot-a Mario. When I'm‑a Mega Mario, everybody better get out of Mario way, because-a, Mario means‑a business.
- Daylan
- Definitely, definitely stomping with the big boys. I saw that. That’s crazy right there. But what’s up with Luigi and the rest of the crew? You bringing them along too, or what’s up?
- Mario
- Oh yeah. It wouldn’t be Super Mario Brothers if-a my best buddy and brother Luigi is-a not-a there. Plus, you’re gonna see Bowser, Bowser Jr., and even the beautiful... Haaaaah.. Princess-a Peach‑a.
- Daylan
- Now, with that line of characters, I might be able to kinda... kinda guess what the plot is, right?
- Mario
- You got it. Bowser and Bowser Jr. kidnap the princess-a, and it’s up-a to Mario to save her.
- Daylan
- Well, what’s up with her, man? She always seems to get snatched up a lot.
- Mario
- You know, I think it’s time for all of us to chip in and get her a better security system for her castle. Something’s gotta happen. It’s getting cuckoo crazy ridiculous, but at least it keeps‑a Mario busy. Mm‑hmm.
- Daylan
- Now, what are some of the other adventures that players will find in the New Super Mario Brothers game?
- Mario
- Daylan
- Now, one of the cool things about the Nintendo DS is that with a lot of the games, you and your friends can play wirelessly even if only one of you has the game card. Now, does that work with the New Super Mario Brothers game?
- Mario
- Oh yeah, you betcha. I’m‑a loving that-a wireless. If-a you got the game card-a, you can beam a bunch of wireless gameses to up to three of your friendses. That way, everyone gets to be part of the fun. Plus, there’s even a two‑player wireless mode, so you can play as-a Mario while your friend plays as-a Luigi. He and I race and battle to get-a the stars. Woohoo! We’re both-a pretty good at that, if I say so myself.
- Daylan
- Shoot, I’ll say that too. You are pretty good at that. Now, we’re just about out of time. Is there anything else...
- Mario
- Ooh.
- Daylan
- ...that you can break us down?
- Mario
- Yeah. New Super Mario Brothers, it’s available in-a stores right‑a now, only for Nintendo DS‑a, and it stars‑a me, Mario. Woohoo!
Nintendo_Special_DS_Lite.mp4[edit]
- Okay, so you're watching TV on the go right now. You're clearly tech-savvy, but Nintendo DS Lite is for gadget lovers and novices alike. I watched a lifelong gamer play the Nintendo DS Lite for days, then pass it to his three-year-old daughter, who also couldn't put it down. And just as DS Lite is for the young and not so young, the system is the perfect blend of hip and trendy. Now that you're up to speed with the newest Super Mario Brothers adventure, why not check it out on the highly anticipated DS Lite? Mario and company have been part of our collective consciousness for years now, but never in a handheld gaming system as slick and portable as this.
- Nintendo DS Lite is unlike any other handheld gaming system you've ever seen. It's smaller, it's lighter, it's brighter, and it's even more user-friendly. Here are the facts: DS Lite is less than two-thirds the size of the original. Its dual screens can be adjusted to four levels of brightness, so you can play in bright or low light, and the Start and Select buttons have been moved for easier access. Depending on what brightness level you choose, up to 19 hours of gameplay can be expected from the rechargeable battery, and if your friends want to make the most of that powerful battery, too, you can play with them wirelessly via LAN mode up to 100 feet apart. Plus, with just one DS game card, multiple players can play multiplayer games.
- What's more, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection creates a free, inviting environment where gamers of all skills can gather to compete online. All you need is a Nintendo DS or a Nintendo DS Lite and a Wi-Fi compatible DS game. You can find and compete with players around the world, just as if you were playing face-to-face. Oh, and did I mention? It's just $129.99. It's in stores beginning June 11th, so check out the new slimmed-down, polar white DS Lite.
