Coral[1][2] appears as an obstacle in underwater levels of the Super Mario series, as a solid block that must be swum around.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Bros[edit]

Coral first appears in World 2-2 and World 7-2 of Super Mario Bros., where it appears only in vertical stacks. Like other solid underwater objects, the player can stand on coral, but the enemies can swim through it.

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels[edit]

With the increase in the number of underwater levels, coral returns much more prominently in Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. It appears in the levels World 3-2, World 4-1, World 6-1, World 6-2, World 9-1, World 9-2, and World B-2. In World 9-1 and World 9-2, coral appears placed horizontally, although its sprite still displays vertically.

Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

Coral also appears in Super Mario Bros. 3 in their regular size in World 3-1, World 3-5 and World 7-4. In this game, coral resembles a large stack of white or pink rings. In World 4-4, coral instead appears as a larger version of the branching coral from Super Mario Bros.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

Coral appears in the Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 styles in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2 as an aesthetic variation of Ground blocks. Ground blocks placed in a vertical, one-block-wide stack in the underwater theme appear as coral.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door features coral in World 2, the Bowser level parodying Super Mario Bros. underwater levels. It can be destroyed by Bowser's fire breath.
